Nick Fruscello: Hello, its Fantasy Friday! Congratulations to Hockeytown and the Red Wings for capturing their fourth Stanley Cup in 11 years and congrats to the Pens for having great year. Unfortunately, with the exception of the parade on Woodward Avenue right now, the NHL season is done. Leaving us with baseball and baseball only. So give me your baseball questions and if you want to talk about the other off season sports, I'm game.
malkin71: Congrats to the Wings, they were the better team, but the Pens will be back many more times
Nick Fruscello: The Pens will make noise in the playoffs every year from now till the day Crosby retires. I just worry about this upcoming off season with Hossa being a UFA. Hossa was a big part of the playoffs this year, without him I'm not sure the Pens make it to the Finals.
malkin71: Do you think Hossa will stay?
Nick Fruscello: I really don't have a feel. If he wants to win, he should stay, but his value right now is pretty high, especially after the strong postseason, which was the only knock against him. He'll get some big offers, so its really up to him if he wants to stay for less money.
malkin71: It was good to see Geno finally score one, but too little too late.
Nick Fruscello: It was reported today that he was not feeling well and was injured from a hit from Mike Richards in Game 1 of the Eastern Conference Finals. I don't know if a healthy Malkin would have made that much more of a difference though. The Wings defense was very strong in this series, even Crosby started to wind down towards the end.
malkin71: Will anyone make a run at Fleury?
Nick Fruscello: After his spectacular performance in this postseason, I don't see how anyone could not, especially from the east. I could see Boston taking a run at him. They need goaltending and have money to spend. Tampa Bay may also make a run for him as well. I think the Pens need to lock him up before July 1st or something really bad could happen.
malkin71: What are your thoughts on the Pens off season?
Nick Fruscello: Orpik and Malone will probably be gone. I'd keep Ruutu for the right price. Dupuis should be easy to re-sign. I would really like to see the Pens make a serious run for Brian Campbell. One thing that's been demonstrated by the last two championship teams (Ducks and Wings), is that you can never have too many good defensemen in the new NHL. But what about Hossa? In my opinion the most important positions go like this, Goalie (have that), centers (have plenty of those), defensemen and then wings. The Pens defense could really use a Brian Campbell. Also, the Flyers are said to be in the market for Campbell as well.
EvilDetroitEmpire: Hey, Nick. Congrats to your Wings. Thoughts on the salary issues with the Penguins. Who do you see outpricing themselves, and who is worth throwing money at for next year?
Nick Fruscello: Thanks! Someone will throw a lot of money at Malone, so unless he gives the Pens a hometown discount, I'd let him walk. Orpik and Theirren don't get along and I don't see Theirren leaving. I think too many teams want Hossa and will give him a lot more money than the Pens. They need to make sure they keep Fleury, start talking about an extension with Malkin and make a run for Campbell.
XmaNDawg: Travis Hafner just hit waivers in my league. I'm first in waiver priority, should I snag him?
Nick Fruscello: Hafner has a nagging shoulder injury that's messing with his numbers a bit. He's on the DL currently and should be back soon, but there's no guarentee he'll be back to old form when he gets back. I'd let him sit there for awhile unless you're really desperate for power.
tvgoodwin: How long do you think Marshawn Lynch would be out if he is found to be the driver of his vehicle in that hit and run? I was planning on naming him my keeper player in my FF league.
Nick Fruscello: The NFL will probably suspend him for 4 games or so, I would imagine. Roger Godell comes down hard on people that break the rules (unless you're the Patriots) so it wouldn't surprise me to see that happen. I wouldn't give up on him in FF though. Wait to see how it pans out, he still has a bright football career ahead of him.
XmaNDawg: What has gotten into Prince Fielder?!
Nick Fruscello: A hot streak was inevitable for Fielder, he's too good of a power hitter to not wake up for at least one week. He's gotten off to a hot start in June and has some hitter friendly parks coming up in the next week.
malkin71: How much is Campbell wanting?
Nick Fruscello: About the same as Hossa, around $7-$8 million per year. That's a big investment, but I would rather see that money spent on Campbell over Hossa, no offense to Hossa. There isn't a lot of great defensemen out there right now and getting as many good ones as you can, will only improve your chances.
XmaNDawg: Wings + Sundin = 2009 champs?
Nick Fruscello: If Sundin took a pay cut and signed a one or two year deal, I could see it. But the Wings need to concentrate on giving Zetterberg a big contract extension. He is the future captain of the team and they need to make sure he's locked up. After that, why not make a run at Sundin? The Red Wings have had a history of players taking less money to play for them and make a run at a Cup.
malkin71: Just what the Wings need, another old guy
Nick Fruscello: Mats will be 38 next year, but kind of like Nick Lidstrom, his productivity really hasn't dropped. He consistently gets around 30 goals every year and that's on a mediocre (at best) Maple Leafs team. If the Wings got Sundin, they would have a really good chance of repeating.
tvgoodwin: Pens look to have 7 d-men signed for next season. If they go after Campbell, do you think they would trade one of the current D or keep 7 or 8 on the active NHL roster?
Nick Fruscello: I'd let Orpik go and go with Gonchar, Gill, Scuderi, Whitney, Letang, and (hopefully) Campbell. If Eaton gets re-signed, I'd trade either Scuderi or Gill. The Pens blueline would look a lot more formidable that way.
Nick Fruscello: Well that's it for this week. Enjoy the sun and see you next Friday!
