Pitt receiver Williams declared ineligible
Wednesday, June 04, 2008

Pitt sophomore receiver Maurice Williams has been declared academically ineligible for the upcoming season.

"We're disappointed for Maurice but academic performance is a major priority for our program," said Pitt coach Dave Wannstedt in a news release distributed by the athletic department. "We believe Maurice can achieve a lot at Pitt, both academically and athletically, and our expectation is for him to use this as motivation for improvement."

Williams, who is a graduate of Erie Strong Vincent, played in 10 games last season and 100 yards receiving and a touchdown on five catches (20 yards per catch).

Williams was expected to be the team's big-play receiver. It creates an opportunity for Aliquippa standout Jonathan Baldwin, an incoming freshman with similar big-play ability, to perhaps make an impact this season.

Williams will remain on the team and will take a redshirt this season.
