Allderdice center fielder Greg Mesko misses the catch against Canon-McMillan yesterday.

City League baseball champion Allderdice put up a valiant effort in the first round of the PIAA Class AAAA playoffs yesterday, but Canon-McMillan pulled out an 8-7 victory in nine innings at Shaler's Matulevic Field.

Allderdice (13-6) scored two runs in the bottom of the seventh to tie the score, 7-7. With two outs and runners on second and third, Clay Groff hit a ground ball that took a bad hop over the head of Canon-McMillan second baseman Mike Spartz, scoring two runs.

Canon-McMillan (19-5) scored the winning run in the top of the ninth when Andre Hayden hit a one-out triple and scored on Aaron Wiegel's sacrifice fly.

"The City League gets a bad rap sometimes, but this Allderdice team can play with a lot of teams [in the WPIAL]," Canon-McMillan coach Steve Bucci said.

Allderdice out-hit Canon-McMillan, 12-10, but Allderdice was hurt by seven errors.
