TV Notes: 'Farmer' finding an audience on CW
Monday, June 02, 2008

The glossy, big-city world of "Gossip Girl" is far afield of the modest, small-town doings of "Farmer Wants a Wife."

Logic dictates that the ratings gap between the two CW shows -- the highly promoted, buzzed-about "Gossip Girl" and the largely under-the-radar "Farmer" -- would be vast.

But it turns out that "Gossip Girl" has averaged nearly 2.6 million new-episode viewers for the season, while the reality dating show has posted close to 2.2 million so far, according to Nielsen Media Research.

Like other scripted series, "Gossip Girl" was undercut by the 100-day writers strike that interrupted production. And "Gossip Girl" did attract its second-largest audience yet, an estimated 3 million viewers, for its finale last Monday.

Neither it nor "Farmer" has reached the CW blockbuster status of "America's Next Top Model," which averaged up to 4.8 million viewers this season.

But "Farmer," the reality show about Missouri farmer Matt Neustadt's quest for a bride, has been a solid country cousin. It has outdrawn other, hipper former occupants of its 9 p.m. Wednesday slot on CW, including "Pussycat Dolls Present" and "Beauty & the Geek," in both total viewers and the advertiser-coveted 18-to-49 demographic.

"Farmer" continued this week, with five episodes to air and seven women angling to hang on for the June 25 finale and maybe an engagement ring.

'Love' over

There really won't be a fourth season of "Flavor of Love" now that its star is engaged ... but not to the show's latest winner.

On Monday's reunion show, Flavor Flav proposed to Liz, the mother of his youngest son Karma, despite having picked Thing 2 on last week's finale.

"Out of all my shows that I've done, this moment right here is the hardest for me," said Flav after reuniting with the show's contestants. "This is my third season of 'Flavor of Love' and everything, you know what I mean, and I went through 65 women."

The former hype man then revealed that during the six months after the finale was taped and he was apart from Thing 2, he spent time with Liz and Karma.

"The best gift that a man can ever give a child is to love his mother, and you know, I do love his mom," said Flav.

At the end of the reunion special, the baby mama and Karma joined Flavor Flav on stage, where he dropped to one knee to propose. Thing 2 took the news surprisingly well, and stated that she was just happy to be friends with Flav.

Even though "Flavor of Love" won't see a fourth season, it's possible that a wedding special would be in the works.
