A familiar thing happened at the Western Pennsylvania Scholastic Lacrosse Association championships: Mt. Lebanon won.

Mt. Lebanon used a strong fourth quarter to defeat Seneca Valley, 9-8, in the Division I championship last night at Bethel Park. It was the third year in a row Mt. Lebanon won the championship and sixth time since 2000.

"A lot of people didn't give this team a chance to be in this game at the beginning of the year," said Mt. Lebanon coach Kee Joe Song. "These kids worked their rear ends off. It was pure senior leadership that did it. That's what it came down to."

Seneca Valley put up a valiant effort, scoring the first two goals and holding a 5-4 lead after two quarters. But Mt. Lebanon's offense came alive in the third with four goals by Michael Freas, Brad Allen, Chris White and Anthony Argentine.

Seneca Valley made things interesting in the fourth, when Jake McAndrew scored with 8:06 remaining, and Matt Hammel added a goal with 6:23 left to bring the Raiders within 8-7. The score stayed that way until Chris White scored with 26 seconds left for Mt. Lebanon. Hammel scored with 14 seconds remaining.

For the game, White, Allen and Alexander Kuqali all scored two goals. McAndrew and Hammel both scored three goals for Seneca Valley.

"We made a couple of adjustments here and there in the game, but nothing real major," Song said. "We lost our composure for a little bit at the end of the game, but these kids just found a way. I don't know how they do it."

Division 2

Kiski School lost in last year's Division 2 title game, but Kiski finished as champion this year, defeating Baldwin, 15-10, yesterday at Bethel Park. Baldwin came in with more goals than any other team in the WPSLA, but Kiski was the more offensive team this time. Kiski held a 7-4 lead after two quarters and opened up a seven-goal lead when four players scored in the third quarter. Joe Kuhn and Brandon Bortignon finished with three goals each for Kiski School while Derek Young, Dan Celco and Kyle Davis all scored two goals.

Mike Marnik scored three goals for Baldwin while Ian Wild and Eric Settelmaier tallied two each. Goalie Ryan Miller made 16 saves.

Division 3

Eric Levine, the No. 4 scorer in the WPSLA, had another big game to help Allderdice defeat Vincentian, 9-8, in the Divison 3 championship yesterday at Bethel Park. Levine finished with four goals to give him 29 for the season. Aaron Zell and Sam Kazman both scored two goals for Allderdice and David Levine had 12 saves.

Phil Ciarrocchi and Joe Lampe provided most of the offense for Vincentian.

Ciarrocchi had four goals and an assist and Lampe had three goals and five assists.
