Ex-Duke James starts slowly at NBA camp
Friday, May 30, 2008
Shawn James, had four points and three rebounds in debut.

Former Duquesne standout Shawn James took a shaky first step on what he hopes will be the road to an NBA career.

James, a 6-foot-10 junior, who forfeited his final season of eligibility by signing with an agent, had three points and four rebounds for Team Two in a 90-85 victory against Team One Wednesday in the first of three games at the NBA pre-draft camp in Orlando, Fla.

In one of the capsule summaries of all 64 players who participated at the prestigious camp, NBAdraft.net had this to say about James' performance: "He is very long and has a fairly fluid release on his jump shot, but he is too weak and looks somewhat out of place."

In addition to playing two more games before the camp ends today, James and the others will work out for scouts, coaches and general managers representing all the NBA teams. The players will spend two hours daily on various drills that include five spot-up shooting positions, one-on-one and two-on-two situations.

The Blue Team player who received the most early attention was Gary Forbes, a 6-7 forward from Massachusetts who was the Atlantic 10 Conference Player of the Year. Forbes, who had a team-high 17 points, was on the all-tournament team at the Portsmouth (Va.) Invitational last month. James wasn't invited to Portsmouth.

Kojo Mensah, a 6-1 junior and James' teammate at Duquesne, wasn't invited to either Portsmouth or Orlando. He, too, has signed with an agent.

James led Duquesne in scoring (12.6 ppg) and rebounding (6.9 rpg) last year and set a school record with 111 blocks despite being limited by shoulder and knee injuries.

He played at Northeastern as a freshman and sophomore and led Division I with an NCAA-record 6.53 blocks per game as a sophomore. He transferred to Duquesne and sat out 2006-07.
