Little league Crawfords on the road for two Sundays
Thursday, May 29, 2008

When the Homestead Grays needed Josh Gibson, they found the Negro Leagues slugger at a game in Dormont, catching for the Pittsburgh Crawfords. And when the little league Crawfords needed a game, they found one in Dormont.

At 2 p.m. this Sunday (June 1), the Crawfords, a travel team from the Josh Gibson Little League, will play teams from the Dormont Athletic Boosters Association at Pop Murray Field in Dormont Park. At 6 p.m. June 5, the Crawfords will play the Marlins, a majors team from the Mt. Lebanon Baseball Association.

The South Hills leagues responded to a request from the Josh Gibson Foundation for away games for its team of 10- through 12-year-olds from the Hill District, North Side and other city neighborhoods. Earlier this month, Pittsburgh Pirates Charities, Major League Baseball and local groups announced a $272,000 renovation of the Josh Gibson Little League's home field in the Hill District. Since the facility won't be ready until next season, the foundation opted to field one travel team, the Crawfords.

Admission is free to both games. To line up a game with the Crawfords, call 412-771-6949 or go to www.joshgibson.org.
