4 more county fugitives arrested
Thursday, May 29, 2008

Monica Brookins just could no longer stomach the 15 minutes of fame caused by her infamous placement among the area's most wanted fugitives.

So, yesterday, Ms. Brookins turned herself in to Allegheny County sheriff's deputies.

She is among four fugitives from Comcast Cable's 20 Most Wanted who were taken into custody in 24 hours.

The round-up began Tuesday night when sheriff's deputies learned that fugitive Edward Charles Kelso had been living in an apartment near the corner of Chauncey Drive and Bedford Avenue in the Hill District.

Mr. Kelso, 22, had been scheduled for trial last June on drug trafficking charges.

Deputies and city police missed Mr. Kelso Tuesday morning at the Hill District residence. They caught up with him there around 7 p.m. Tuesday.

Another fugitive was captured when Penn Hills police were called to quell a fight between two brothers in the early morning hours yesterday at a local gas station.

It turned out that one of the combatants, Eugene Jerome Graham, 22, of North Braddock, was wanted. Three bench warrants had been issued for his arrest for missing his trial scheduled last September. He is charged with two counts of aggravated assault, three counts of possession with intent to deliver a controlled substance, and one count each of attempted burglary, reckless endangerment, making terroristic threats, harassment and criminal mischief.

At about 6 p.m. yesterday, an informant called the sheriff's tip line to report the whereabouts of fugitive Ronald Richards, who had violated his probation after convictions for aggravated assault, disarming a law enforcement officer, simple assault, making terroristic threats, reckless driving, three counts of drunken driving, and various vehicle code violations.

By 6:30 p.m. sheriff's deputies and Glassport police located and arrested Mr. Richards in the 500 block of Allegheny Avenue in the borough.

Sheriff's deputies already were on the Richards call when they were summoned by Ms. Brookins, 21, of the Oakland, who called to arrange a meeting.

Ms. Brookins, who had been scheduled for a pre-trial conference last month before her prosecution on a charge of aggravated assault, met deputies at the entrance of Magee Womens Hospital of UPMC, where she was taken into custody.

According to a release from the sheriff's office, Ms. Brookins "stated that she could not stand the stress of knowing that her picture was on the list and she stated that she wished to turn herself in."
