Pittsburgh Zoo & PPG Aquarium officials are expected to confer with one another and Pittsburgh detectives today in the wake of an armed robbery at the Highland Park facility on Sunday near closing time.
Spokeswoman Connie George said officials likely will change money-handling procedures because of the robbery. Both she and Pittsburgh police said the amount of money taken was still being determined.
Ms. George said she expected zoo officials to confer with Pittsburgh robbery detectives today as well.
The holdup occurred around 5:12 p.m. Sunday when a female employee was leaving the admission booth at the zoo's main entrance with the money. Neither she nor any visitors were physically harmed.
More than 10,000 people visited the zoo that day. Admission is $12 for adults, $11 for seniors, and $10 for children 2 to 13.
Pittsburgh police said a gunman got out of a white SUV and approached the female employee, pointing a handgun at her as several other men remained in the vehicle. The gunman and the others fled in what was believed to be a Chevrolet Tahoe with a license plate beginning with the letters "GYD," police said.
Detectives were expected today to study footage captured by zoo surveillance cameras in the area of the robbery.
The zoo had just begun its summer hours the preceding day with gates closing for admission at 4:30 p.m. and the entire facility closing at 6 p.m.
Anyone with information about the robbery is asked to call Pittsburgh robbery detectives at 412-323-7800.
