Ask LaMont: Finding the proper attire for a graduation dinner
Tuesday, May 27, 2008
Q: I'm going to a graduation dinner this weekend at a restaurant in honor of a friend's kid who just finished college. I'm not sure what to wear. The place isn't Morton's, but it's not McDonald's, either.

A: You don't have to wear a suit and tie to look appropriately polished. In fact, it sounds like that might be over-dressing for the event. You want to dress in a way that reflects the importance of the occasion. The graduate has achieved a milestone that warrants celebration. And this is a planned sit-down meal, not an impromptu backyard barbecue. So, my suggestion is to wear a blazer or sport coat with plain jeans or khakis. You can go with an open-collar, buttoned shirt or a knit crewneck pullover, and wear leather loafers or lace-up shoes rather than sneakers.
