Silver Stars shine vs. Storm
Sophia Young scored 23 points, Becky Hammon added 20 and the host San Antonio Silver Stars defeated the Seattle Storm, 87-72, yesterday in WNBA action. Hammon, who came into the game in a shooting slump, made 6 of 15 shots from the floor, including 4 of 10 from 3-point range.
Swin Cash scored 15 points to lead Seattle. Reigning WNBA MVP Lauren Jackson had 14 points and seven rebounds in the Storm.

Lindsay Whalen scored 21 points to lead four teammates in double figures and the host Connecticut Sun defeated the Sacramento Monarchs, 87-64, for their first 3-0 start in franchise history.
Hockey
Tim Brent scored with 30 seconds left as the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins edged the Portland Pirates, 3-2, to advance to the AHL Calder Cup final. The Penguins will play the Chicago Wolves in the best-of-seven final beginning Thursday in Chicago.
Lacrosse
Johns Hopkins ended Duke's season for the third time in four years and spoiled the final chance for the players stained by a stripper scandal to leave with an NCAA championship. Kevin Huntley scored four goals in Johns Hopkins' 10-9 victory against top-seeded Duke in Foxborough, Mass., and put the Blue Jays in the championship game tomorrow against Syracuse. The Orange beat Virginia, 12-11, in double overtime in the other semifinal.
It was the final game for the five Duke players granted an extra year of eligibility to make up for their aborted 2006 season, when a since-disbarred district attorney charged three players with raping a stripper hired to dance at a party. In 2005 and '07, Johns Hopkins (11-5) defeated Duke (18-2) by one goal in the NCAA title game.
Tennis
Top-seeded Nikolay Davydenko won the Hypo Group International in Poertschach, Austria, for a third time, beating defending champion Juan Monaco, 6-2, 2-6, 6-2.
Agnieszka Radwanska beat top-seeded Elena Dementieva of Russia, 6-3, 6-2, to win the Istanbul Cup in Turkey and become the first Polish woman to surpass $1 million in career earnings on the WTA Tour.
Gilles Simon defeated fifth-seeded Julien Benneteau, 7-5, 6-2, in an all-French clay-court final to clinch his third career title in Casablanca, Morocco.
Sweden won the World Team Cup for the fourth time, capturing the doubles to beat Russia, 2-1, in Duesseldorf, Germany. With the best-of-three series at 1-1, Robin Soderling and Robert Lindstedt edged Mikhail Youzhny and Dmitry Tursunov, 4-6, 7-6 (5), 11-9, after saving a match point at 9-8 in the match tiebreaker.
Boxing
Ricky Hatton prevailed in a lopsided decision against Juan Lazcano to retain his IBO light welterweight title and restart his career before a raucous home crowd in Manchester, England. Hatton won easily on all three judges scorecards at the Manchester City soccer ground: 120-110, 118-110, 120-108.
Soccer
The Pittsburgh Riverhounds fell to 0-5-2 after a 3-0 loss to the Cleveland City Stars in USL Second Division action.
U.S. midfielder Benny Feilhaber has a torn meniscus in his right knee that needs an operation and will miss an exhibition game Wednesday against England. Maurice Edu of Toronto FC was called in to replace Feilhaber on the roster.
Baseball
The Washington Wild Things fell to 0-3 in the Frontier League after a 13-3 loss to the Traverse City Beach Bums at Consol Energy Park. The Wild Things had 12 hits compared to 15 for Traverse City.
Track and field
IUP's Sean Strauman of South Park High School won the national title in the 800 meters at the NCAA Division II championship in Walnut, Calif. Strauman won by 0.02 seconds.
Allegheny College's Liz Earley of Peters Township High School finished second in the hammer throw at the NCAA Division III championships in Oshkosh, Wis.
Westminster's Jess Cooper of Laurel High School was third in the high jump at the Division III meet.
