Beaver
A parade sponsored by the Beaver Area Heritage Foundation begins at 10:30 a.m. Monday at Third and Beaver streets, continuing down Third Street to the Beaver Cemetery's Old Receiving Chapel for a ceremony.
The parade will consist of veterans, fire departments and emergency medical services, Scout troops and Little League baseball teams, a Fort McIntosh Garrison unit, and Beaver Area Senior High School JROTC and its Fife and Drum Corps. Children are invited to ride their bicycles in the parade, in the annual decorated bike contest sponsored by Snitger's Bike Shop.
U.S. Army Col. Tom Collins, former coalition spokesman for Operation Enduring Freedom, will be the keynote speaker at the ceremony that will feature the JROTC Fife and Drum Corps, the Beaver Area Senior High School band and concert choir. Senior class President Cory Malagise will recite the Gettysburg Address.
In front of the speakers dais will be 26 flags -- one to represent every 100 veterans buried in the cemetery. In the event of rain, the ceremony will be in First Presbyterian Church, 252 College Ave., Beaver.
Following the ceremony, Beaver's "Greatest Generation" exhibit, a tribute to local World War II veterans, will be opened free from 1 to 4 p.m. in the Beaver Area Heritage Museum.
Bridgeville
Memorial ceremonies will begin at 8:30 a.m. Monday with observances at St. Barbara Cemetery, Betheny Presbyterian Cemetery and the Bridgeville War Memorial.
A parade will begin at 10 a.m. at Bridgeville American Legion Post 54 and proceed on Washington Avenue to Melrose Cemetery, where a program will be held at 11. An observance will follow at Holy Child Cemetery.
Coraopolis
Louis Gilberti, a Korean War veteran, will be grand marshal of the 78th community Memorial Day parade, sponsored by Keith-Holmes Post 402, Veterans of Foreign Wars and its Ladies Auxiliary. The parade will begin at 1:30 p.m. Monday and proceed on Fifth Avenue from the park-n-ride lot (Thorn Street) to Chestnut Street.
Among those marching will be The Ohio Valley Band sponsored by VFW Post 402, American Legion units, Vietnam veterans, Iraq veterans, music and marching groups, antique cars, fire departments and floats. Also taking part will be the Seton Hill Pipe Band, the Steel City Ambassadors Drum and Bugle Corps, the West Park Firemen's Band, the Cornell and Moon Area high school bands and the Greater Pittsburgh Emerald Society Pipes and Drums.
Fourth Avenue will be opened to two-way traffic as an alternate route during the parade. The park-n-ride lot will be closed Monday.
Post 402 members and its Ladies Auxiliary will place flags on veterans' graves in the Coraopolis, Resurrection, St. Joseph and Sharon cemeteries. Boy Scouts and Cub Scouts from Coraopolis and Moon will participate, too.
Findlay
A community service will be held at noon Monday at St. Columkille Cemetery.
Kennedy
A parade will form at 1806 Pine Hollow Road at the former Kenmawr School building and proceed at 9 a.m. Monday on Pine Hollow and Fairhaven roads to the war memorial, where the American Legion Post 464 will conduct a ceremony.
Active duty or reserve service men and woman are invited as guests of the American Legion. To participate, call Jan Thomas, 412-771-3127.
McKees Rocks, Stowe
Flags have been planted on more than 2,000 graves of veterans in the St. Mary Roman Catholic, St. Mark Roman Catholic, St. Mary Ukrainian Orthodox and the Holy Trinity Polish National cemeteries.
Members of Sto-Rox American Legion Post 618, McKees Rocks Catholic War Veterans Post 1713, Sto-Rox Italian American War Veterans Post 30, and Vesle Post 418 Veterans of Foreign Wars will participate Monday in a motorcade that will begin at 9 a.m. and proceed from Post 618 on Broadway Avenue and stop for ceremonies at neighborhood honor rolls at Norwood, Pittock, Presston, Holy Ghost Byzantine Catholic Church, Esplen and St. Mary's Roman Catholic Church.
At each stop, there will be prayers, the placing of a memorial wreath, the firing of three rifle volleys by the VFW Vesle Post 418 Firing Squad and the playing of taps by a Sto-Rox High School Band.
The motor caravan also will stop in the middle of the McKees Rocks Bridge to honor Navy veterans. A memorial wreath will be placed in the Ohio River.
