There are more composers writing worldwide now than ever before. In history. Yes, even more than in Beethoven's day and even despite the harsh realities of few opportunities to hear one's music performed (not to mention to be paid). Of course, I am counting many who do it on the side, but I believe this is even true if you just take the semi- to full-time professional ones. It's mostly a function of math. There are more people now than ever. And a larger middle class makes a difference, too.
But there are so many of them that it can be hard to search for composers. Now the American Music Center has a new database to help out. It is called the AMC Online Library and it is pretty thorough. I just wanted to pass it on. I know most people won't be interested, but for those that want to find out more about the scene, it is helpful. The rest of the site is dynamite, too, especially its online Webzine newmusicbox.org that offers a wealth of info and insight about contemporary music.
Enjoy!
