You may never have heard of Glenn Ligon, Kenny Scharf, Marilyn Minter or Cai Guo-Qiang, but you may soon become very familiar with their work.
These influential contemporary artists are among 13 whose designs appear on limited-edition T-shirts by Gap, with a portion of proceeds benefiting the Whitney Museum of American Art.
Shirt images in the Artists Edition collection range from abstract to provocative. Other artists participating are Chuck Close, Jeff Koons, Kerry James Marshall, Sarah Sze, Barbara Kruger, Rirkrit Tiravanija, Kiki Smith, Ashley Bickerton and Hanna Liden.
The shirts bowed Thursday and range from $28 to $38 at select Gap stores, www.gap.com and most Whitney museum locations in the United States.
You can see the artists wearing their T-shirt designs in billboards, newspaper ads, Gap in-store displays and the June issues of Vanity Fair, Vogue, W and The New Yorker. Models Stephanie Seymour and Shalom Harlow stand in for Jeff Koons and Barbara Kruger, respectively.
Hair has different needs in the summer, and Beverly Hills stylist and salon owner Nick Chavez offers his top five tips for keeping it healthy and manageable.
Protect hair from the sun. Use a fortified mist with sunscreen in it to moisturize, restore elasticity and to fight the sun's drying, damaging effects.
Give your hair a break from blow dryers and irons. High temperatures are damaging to hair, so go natural for a while and give your hair a rest.
Moisturize like crazy. Use a good conditioner daily and a deep-conditioning treatment once a month. For added benefits when conditioning, leave conditioner in for five minutes, then cover hair with a plastic cap, apply heat from a blow dryer and rinse. Leave-in conditioners are good for super-hydrating hair shafts overnight, especially for curly hair. Remember to keep conditioner 3 inches away from the scalp.
Wash away chlorine or product buildup. This process of clarifying cleanses hair oils and other things that clog it over time. Try something that hydrates while it cleans and that doesn't strip color from hair.
Shine on. Nothing looks healthier than lustrous, silky-smooth locks. There are hair glosses and serums that tame frizzies, calm fly-aways and eliminate static electricity. If they contain sunscreen, all the better.
Speaking of hair, L'Oreal Paris is accepting nominations for its third annual "Women of Worth" grassroots award program.
Women with inspiring volunteer work and involvement in community-enrichment initiatives can be nominated at www.womenofworth.com. The deadline is June 16, and nominees must be at least 18 years old.
Ten honorees will be notified in September. Each will receive $5,000 for her favorite charity, and L'Oreal Paris will donate the same amount to ovarian cancer research and awareness efforts.
In November, one national honoree will be determined by the public in an online vote. She'll be announced at a gala event Dec. 10, and the nonprofit of her choice will receive $25,000.
