By Zachary Spolar, Allderdice High School (City of Pittsburgh Schools)

After years of disorganization, disappointment, and falling short of expectations, Allderdice ice hockey is back. The Dragons have started the season 5-0-1. Senior Nick Novacco Feels that this early success has given the team the confidence they need to enter the season.

Coached by John Cambest and Roy McDonald, Allderdice has defeated Trinity and Ringold, along with a hard-earned tie against Ambrose High School. Allderdice seeks leadership from its captains, seniors Eric Brantner and Ben Hovne, and junior Dan Porco.

Between the pipes for the Dragons is senior Doug Rakoczy, who has only allowed 17 goals in the early part of the season. In from of Rakoczy is a defense which is led by seniors Dougie Levine and Eric Brantner. These seniors lead a defense that is physical, stout and takes no prisoners. Brantner said, "We’re good, period. That’s why we’ve been so successful this year."

Allderdice’s attack is led by Porco, and seniors Jake Dugan and Ricky Jacobs. Allderdice has scored 46 goals in its first six games. Novacco said, "I’m not surprised at all by this great goal scoring tally; we are a solid team with a great offense."

Hovne pointed out the valuable support that Allderdice has received from new team members. The team features junior Troy Kallenborn, a West Mifflin student who gives the Dragons good minutes on the ice. Allderdice has also promoted several players from the freshman team to the varsity squad, a move which has strengthened and added depth to the Dragons’ bench.

Although there are 16 games left, Porco is confident that the team will be successful enough to reach the playoffs. Hovne said, "The team is playing well this year because we’re just having fun playing together. With this strong start I think we can have a successful season, including playoffs."

From offense to defense, to goalie, Allderdice has produced good work at the start of this 2007-2008 season. Despite sweat drenched uniforms, crushing checks, and a formidable schedule ahead, Allderdice ice hockey is on its way to one beautiful season.
