2. Looking back

The 1992-93 Penguins are considered the best team in franchise history. In addition to producing four 100-point scorers, that team had 57 wins and 119 points, both franchise records. We will take a weekly look at what that squad did 15 years ago this week:

» May 12: Islanders 7, Penguins 5
Steve Thomas had two goals and two assists for the Islanders in a home win in Game 6 of the Patrick Division final.

» May 14: Islanders 4, Penguins 3
David Volek's goal 5:16 into overtime gave the Islanders perhaps the biggest upset win in NHL history and dashed the Penguins' hopes for a third consecutive Stanley Cup championship. Rick Tocchet's goal with 1:00 left in regulation sent the game to overtime. Glenn Healy made 42 saves for New York.

3. Path of least resistance?

If they finish their series this weekend, the Penguins and Red Wings will have advanced to the Stanley Cup final in a combined total of 29 games. Since the NHL went to its current format of four rounds of seven-game series, no two Cup finalists have played fewer games to reach the final. Teams are listed with the amount of games they played before the final:

Year Team Team Total Games

1995 Devils (16) Red Wings (14) 30

2007 Ducks (16) Senators (15) 31

2003 Devils (17) Mighty Ducks (14) 31

1997 Red Wings (16) Flyers (16) 31

1992 Penguins (17) Blackhawks (14) 31

1989 Flames (16) Canadiens (15) 31

1998 Oilers (15) Bruins (16) 31

4. He said what?

"His feelings are not important right now."
-- John Stevens,
Philadelphia Flyers coach on Flyers right winger Steve Downie. Turnovers by Downie in Games 2 and 3 of the Eastern Conference final led to Penguins goals.

5. The fan's hat trick

Three playoff games to watch in the week ahead:

» Stars at Red Wings, 1:30 p.m. today
Nicklas Lidstrom and the Red Wings have a 3-1 series lead and want to move on. Mike Modano, Sergei Zubov and the Stars want to stay alive. (TV: Versus)

» Russia vs. Canada, 1 p.m. Sunday
You may not have noticed this tournament, but Alex Ovechkin leads Russia against Dany Heatley and Canada in the final of the IIHF World Championships.

» Flyers at Penguins, 3 p.m. Sunday
Like the Stars, Mike Richards' Flyers are down, 3-1, in the Eastern Conference final. Like the Red Wings, Sidney Crosby's Penguins want to wrap it up. (TV: Versus)
