Highlights: Burrell pitcher tosses no-hitter
Seton-LaSalle wins to remain unbeaten

Seth Napierkowski of No. 2 Burrell (16-1) retired the final 19 batters as he no-hit Riverview (10-10) in the Bucs' 10-0 win at Shaler in the first round of the WPIAL playoffs. Napierkowski, a senior right-hander, struck out seven and walked one. Phil Spagnolo led the offense with two hits and three RBIs.

More Class AA first round

Seton-LaSalle, the Post-Gazette's No. 1 team in Class AA, rolled through the regular season as the only undefeated team in the WPIAL. The Rebels (18-0) showed no signs of slowing down as they opened the playoffs with a 5-1 win against Southmoreland (10-10) at Burkett Complex in Robinson. Junior right-hander Derek Law pitched a two-hitter and struck out 18, including the side in the seventh inning to record the win. Don McClelland, Chris Weigold and Tyler Trainor each had two hits for Seton-LaSalle.

• Junior right-hander Nate Antone threw a one-hitter to lead No. 5 Greensburg Central Catholic (16-3) to a 10-0, five-inning win against Brownsville (12-5) at Seton Hill University. Antone struck out seven and walked none. He also went 3 for 4 at the plate with an RBI.

• No. 3 Beaver (15-4) defeated Riverside (13-7), 5-1, at Chippewa Park. Alex George belted a two-run homer in the top of the first for the Bobcats. Manny Cutlip struck out 11 to earn the victory.

Center (15-5) scored five runs in the bottom of the third to erase a 3-0 deficit on its way to a 7-4 win against Washington (10-6) at Burkett Complex. Cory Wagner and Anthony McPherson each had two RBIs for the Trojans.

Mohawk (11-7) blanked Charleroi (10-5), 6-0, at Highlands. Daniel Mioni had two hits and had three RBIs for Mohawk. Cory Nesbitt fanned 16 to pick up the win.

Ford City (12-5) scored three runs in the top of the seventh, including a two-run double by Brandon Carson, to edge Shady Side Academy (13-7), 4-3, at Highlands.

Class AAA softball

• Breanna Morris singled home Rachel Rohanna with the winning run with no outs in the bottom of the ninth to give No. 4 Waynesburg (13-4) a 2-1 win against Kittanning (12-8) at California University. Lauren Minor struck out 11 to notch the win.

• Defending champion Belle Vernon (13-7) opened its title defense with a 3-1 win against Yough (13-3) at California University.

Coaching news

• Hampton has opened its football coaching position, meaning Greg Mihalik is out after 10 seasons. Mihalik had a 60-44 record and went to the WPIAL playoffs six times. Hampton athletic director Bill Cardone said school officials can't comment on the action because it is a personnel matter.
