Summer breeze blowin' in
Friday, May 16, 2008

Even though the Penguins are still on the ice and Hillary and Obama are still going at it, the unofficial start of summer is almost upon us.

Hollywood started early with "Iron Man" and "Speed Racer." This weekend the festival season gets under way with the Pittsburgh Folk Festival and the Pittsburgh International Children's Festival. The first concert at the Post-Gazette Pavilion is only two weeks away.

Among the things to take note of:

• Point State Park is still off-limits, so the Three Rivers Arts Festival Main Stage will be back where it was last year, in the Gateway Center triangle, but the food booths will move to the inbound lane of Liberty Avenue to create more space.

• The T. rex exhibit is about to open at the Carnegie Museum of Natural History.

• The Titanic will be shipwrecked at the Science Center.

• There are fewer summer movies with a "III" or "IV" on the end of the title. Good thing there. Also, Pixar has a new feature and Will Smith is back on Fourth of July weekend.

• The concert lineup will be the perfect place for your cowboy hat and black metal T-shirt. Not at the same time.

• Calliope has a new event this summer called Rootz: The Green City Music Festival at Mellon Park.

• The Shadyside Arts Festival on Ellsworth is still up in the air.

• Attack Theatre will keep the dance scene hopping, the Pittsburgh New Music Ensemble freshens the classical scene and Pittsburgh CLO might just be bringing your favorite musical.
