Athletes of the Week: Ian Wild, Tabitha Bemis
Thursday, May 15, 2008
Ian Wild
Baldwin

The past week: A 6-foot, 185-pound midfielder in lacrosse, Wild helped the Highlanders to wins against Vincentian, Chartiers Valley and Trinity. He averaged more than six points per game in those games and is second in scoring in the WPSLA with 39 goals and 17 assists.

Check this out: Also an all-conference defensive back in football, Wild is headed to Mercyhurst next year where he plans to play football and lacrosse.

Finish this sentence, I started playing lacrosse because ... It looked like fun and it was something different. I started when I was in seventh grade and have really liked it ever since.

Lacrosse will be a sanctioned boys' sport by the WPIAL next year. Good move or bad move? Good move. It will attract a lot more kids and some of the better athletes because it will be school-funded. I definitely think it will help the sport grow in this area and the players will all become better.

Which can you hit someone harder in, football or lacrosse? A lacrosse game. There are less pads for one. Plus, in some situations, the goalie can set someone up where you can really smack him.

Has it hit you that your time as a high school kid is dwindling to just a few days? No, it hasn't hit me yet. I don't think it will hit me until it is over.

Tabitha Bemis
Quaker Valley

The past week: Bemis won the triple jump at the WPIAL Class AA track and field championships, setting a meet record (38-4 1/2).

Check this out: Bemis, a sophomore, is adept at three sports. Besides being a standout in track and field, she is a two-time all-around WPIAL gymnastics champion. She is an elite gymnast and practices the sport year-round. This winter, she competed in diving and finished sixth at the WPIAL Class AA championships.

Do you realize gymnastics, diving and track is a combination you don't see often from athletes? I guess. I was at eastern nationals for gymnastics the other day and the girls were all talking. They asked, 'So, is gymnastics your life?' I said, 'No. I do other sports.' They looked at me like I was crazy. At my level, those girls spend 30-40 hours a week practicing gymnastics, where I spend about 12 a week.

Any significance to your first name? Not really.

There was a TV show years ago called "Bewitched" and a little girl in the show was Tabitha. Yeah, actually that's where my parents first heard the name and they liked it.

Sporting event you'd like to see? The Olympics.

People might be surprised to know that ... I ride quads and motorcycles a lot. I probably don't come off as that type of person.
