Needing a win to stay alive, the Stars' stars come through in a 3-1 win against the Red Wings.
Semi-live blogging of the Red Wings-Stars game.
PREGAME
-Someone's already thrown an octopus on the ice in Dallas.F
FIRST PERIOD
13:44: Habs coach Guy Carbonneau is interviewed. His daughter, the wife of Stars coach Brenden Morrow, just gave birth to twins. No word yet if Carbonneau is teaching them to hate Sidney Crosby yet.
8:03: Detroit kills off the second Stars' power play of the game. The Red Wings are an insane 16-for-17 this series on the penalty kill.
6:48: Darren McCarty is sent off for hooking. If the stars don't score here, they deserve to get swept.
4:47: The Red Wings kill another penalty. They didn't even allow a shot on this power play.
2:59: Mike Emrick busts out a Unified Team reference.
0:00: End of period. Red Wings 0, Stars 0.
-Dallas controlled the period for the most part. They just couldn't cash in on their chances.
-The Stars out-shot the Red Wings, 9-5.
SECOND PERIOD
14:18: We have a delay as crews change a piece of broken glass.
13:17: The Red Wings get their first power play. Stephane Robidas is sent off for holding Darren Helm.
12:27: Pavel Datsyk rips a wrister from the right side that beats Marty Turco to the far side. It's a wicked wrister but it's waved off. Official say Tomas Holmstrom interfered with Turco but it's a terrible call. Replays fail to show Holmstrom even entering the crease or making contact with Turco. Much as been made out of if Holmstrom has interfered with Turco in the first three games of this series. Perhaps that was a make-up call by the officials. Either way, the officials really messed up on that one.
11:12: Dallas kills the penalty.
7:39: Detroit gets another chance as Brenden Morrow is nabbed for cross checking.
4:57: Steve Ott takes a stupid penalty and elbows a Red Wing in the head. Two minutes.
0:22: Robidas comes down the right boards and basically tosses it on net. The puck hits off Loui Eriksson and deflects into the net by Osgood. It's a Michel Ouellet special, but Dallas will take it. It's the Stars' first lead of the series. American Airlines Center explodes. They finally have something to cheer about. The "Hey Song" is played. Stars 1-0.
0:00: End of period. Stars 1, Red Wings 0.
-The Red Wings have a 19-15 edge in shots.
-With a little help from the officials, Marty Turco is playing out of his mind.
19:11: That didn't take long. Former Penguins forward Toby Petersen turns the puck over in the offensive zone for Dallas. Pavel Datsyuk forces it back up ice and dishes a pass to Henrik Zetterberg. Zetterberg blows a wrister by Turco to the far side. Red Wings 1, Stars 1.
14:25: The Stars' stars get it done on the power play. Brad Richards dishes a pass from the point to Sergei Zubov in the corner. Zubov dishes to Mike Modano in the slot and he one-times it by a helpless Chris Osgood. Stars 2-1.
5:26: Mike Ribeiro centers a puck into the slot. Morrow takes it, turns and rockets a shot that beats Osgood. You have to admire Morrow. Dallas' star players (pardon the pun) have come through for them tonight.
2:17: The Stars give the Red Wings a sliver of hope as Morrow throws the puck out of play. Two minutes for delay of game.
1:11: Osgood is pulled for an extra attacker.
0:35: Modano is nailed for hooking. The Red Wings will get a five-on-three (a six-on-three really considering the goaltender is pulled).
0:00: End of game. Stars 3, Red Wings 1.
POSTGAME
-The Stars need their best players to come through and they did. Mike Modano and Brenden Morrow scored big goals and Marty Turco played out of his mind.
-The Red Wings totally got hosed on the interference call on Holmstrom.
