The path of least resistance?
May 13, 2008

It may be a bit early to bring this up, but it's looking more and more every day like the Penguins and Red Wings are on a collision course and will meet in the Stanley Cup final.

The thing that is really striking about these two teams is the relative ease in which they've progressed through the playoffs. Detroit is on the verge of completing its second sweep in a row, and the Penguins have only lost one game in the postseason.

Should both of these teams complete sweeps in the conference finals, they will have combined to play 27 games this postseason (The Penguins would have played 13 and Detroit 14.) That would be the fewest postseason games among any two Cup finalists since the NHL went to the current playoff format of four rounds of seven-game series in 1987.

A look at all the Cup finalists since 1987 and the amount of games each played to reach the final:

Year Winning Team (Games To Reach Final) Losing Team (Games to Reach Final) Total Games
2007 Ducks (16) Senators (15) 31
2006 Hurricanes (18) Oilers (17) 35
2004 Lightning (18) Flames (19) 35
2003 Devils (17) Mighty Ducks (14) 31
2002 Red Wings (18) Hurricanes (18) 36
2001 Avalanche (16) Devils (18) 34
2000 Devils (17) Stars (17) 34
1999 Stars (17) Sabres (15) 32
1998 Red Wings (18) Capitals (17) 35
1997 Red Wings (16) Flyers (15) 31
1996 Avalanche (18) Panthers (18) 36
1995 Devils (16) Red Wings (14) 30
1994 Rangers (16) Canucks (17) 33
1993 Canadiens (15) Kings (19) 34
1992 Penguins (17) Blackhawks (14) 31
1991 Penguins (18) North Stars (17) 35
1990 Oilers (17) Bruins (16) 33
1989 Flames (16) Canadiens (15) 31
1988 Oilers (15) Bruins (16) 31
1987 Oilers (14) Flyers (19) 33

Yeah, this list is kind of disrespectful to the Stars and especially to the Flyers but we had a Flyers fan write to us yesterday (Someone apparently taught one of them how to use a computer.) accusing us of being anti-Flyers. No duh. That's like is like accusing Nakama of being pro-Japanese food. We just wanted to throw a little bit more gasoline on the fire.
