Penguins playoffs chat with Seth Rorabaugh
Monday, May 12, 2008

motor75: Was it me or is the Versus network pro-Philly? It got so bad these first two games of this series that I turned off the sound and listened to Lang (with the HD signal, Lang tends to be 5-10 seconds ahead, so its something I don't usually do)?

Seth Rorabaugh: I didn't really get a chance to watch the first two games on television. I was at the game. We have a screen there, but you can't really hear the audio. That said, Versus is a Comcast property and Comcast owns the Flyers ...

lord_stanley: Why are we stuck with the Verses B team? They make me long for Steigey and Errey, believe it or not.

Seth Rorabaugh: Good question. You would think given that Pittsburgh and Philadelphia are two of the healthiest hockey markets in the US, we'd get Emrick and Olczyk.

Rico_Fata: When's the Cup parade?

Seth Rorabaugh: June 13, 3:43 p.m. It starts at Wholey's Fish market.

James_Taipei: Is the biggest question remaining in this series, is whether the Penguins will sweep the Flyers?

Seth Rorabaugh: I could see the Flyers stealing a game in Philly the way the Rangers did last series.

James_Taipei: Do you think that there might be a push to sign Marian Hossa at the expense of signing other players so that it does not look like the Penguins gave away so much for a rental player?

Seth Rorabaugh: I'd be surprised if they did that. For what Hossa is going to command, they could sign Ryan Malone, Brooks Orpik and maybe Jarkko Ruutu. You can't replace role players like that in season with minor league call ups.

lord_stanley: When will Empty Netters interview Cotton Candy Guy? Everyone in Pittsburgh wants to hear from the legend.

Seth Rorabaugh: EN is too scared of the man's greatness to interview him when he's preforming his noble work. It is a good suggestion.

shrute_bucks: Did it seem like Crosby turned a corner last night? Or did he take advantage of all the attention being paid to Malkin?

Seth Rorabaugh: Possibly. Don't forget, the Flyers played most of that game with only five defenseman. And their best remaining blue liner, Braydon Coburn, went out early. So life was a lot easier for those guys.

Rico_Fata: WWGRD?

Seth Rorabaugh: Dominate.

BostonJames: Could Coburn's injury have contributed to the lack of zip in some of the younger Penguins last night, or at this point even in their young careers are they beyond getting sqeamish and tentative from the sight of that much blood?

Seth Rorabaugh: I can't imagine seeing Coburn on the ice bleeding like that would've thrown the Penguins off. Seemed to me Ottawa's Anton Volcheckov had a worse injury in the first round and the Penguins certainly didn't have any issues that round.

motor75: Is everyone cool with the no-goal call? I kinda figured that it would be "inconclusive video evidence." It also appeared that Crosby may have obscured the view of the referee - who couldn't see that the puck was across the line?

Seth Rorabaugh: Obviously the Penguins weren't going to make a stink about it after the game since they won, but from what I gathered, they seemed to think it was a goal. I thought the officials made the right call. You need to actually see it over the line. You can't assume it did.

shrute_bucks: Did someone forget to tell Tyler Kennedy that Philly is the tough team?

Seth Rorabaugh: Someone must've stolen his copy of Over The Top or something. He was a monster in that fight.

lord_stanley: Why wasn't Bob Nutting in 66's suite last night?

Seth Rorabaugh: He wasn't familiar with this whole "assembling a competitive team" thing the Penguins and Steelers are into... and seeing that many people in one place for a sporting event spooked him

motor75: What's the deal with Jarko's two "unsportsmanlike" penalities - was it more of the refs trying to keep Philly in the game?

Seth Rorabaugh: I think it was more Jarkko Ruutu being Jarkko Ruutu. He's got a reputation, rightly or wrongly, and he pays the price for it sometimes.

shrute_bucks: Whats the over-under for Hatcher crosschecks in game 3?

Seth Rorabaugh: You type that assuming he can actually skate up to an opposing player to cross check him. Watching him "skate" is sad any more. he was so out of position for Talbot's goal last night. I know he's playing with a leg injury, but he's just awful.

lord_stanley: Do the Pens have any sense of overconfidence or are they too young to know what that is?

Seth Rorabaugh: They sure seemed a little too confident last night, but i think the coaching staff keeps them grounded for the most part. Don't expect them to be that sloppy in Game 3.

lord_stanley: Jeff Jimerson rocks.

Seth Rorabaugh: Indisputable fact.

Rico_Fata: One good thing about Mike Lange being on the radio is that he will have the Cup clinching call when it happens. I couldn't stomach Steigy making that call.

Seth Rorabaugh: I certainly don't give Steigerwald or Errey any breaks on Empty Netters, but they're fine announcers. That said, Steigerwald isn't Mike Lange. No one is. There's no one I want to hear call a goal, describe a fight or celebrate a Cup win other than Mike Lange

BostonJames: Crosby is getting a lot of speculation about whether his injury is holding him back. I am still seeing what I always have seen, Crosby thinking and acting so fast with setting up plays that he surprises his linemates and they can't connect on the finish, even someone the class of Hossa. Will Crosby eventually have to slow down to get the productivity, or will others learn to play with him?

Seth Rorabaugh: Well Crosby is tied for the league lead in playoff points. I'm not sure how slowed down he is. Seems to me Crosby has had inferior linemates in the past and did pretty well. Heck he won a scoring title last season without a world-class player like Hossa on his line.

Rico_Fata: Who's Bob Nutting?

Seth Rorabaugh: He owns Kennywoo... er... sorry... the Pirates.

Rico_Fata: I know Mellon Arena sits at 66 Lemieux Place, but why don't we have a statue of the greatest sports figure this town has seen? Maybe they can place one in front of the new arena? If not, maybe we can get a statue of Gary Roberts since he invented hockey.

Seth Rorabaugh: Well from what I understand, Jim Paek doesn't want a statue made of his likeness. Making a statue of Gary Roberts would be pointless. Why make a statue of him when the marble wouldn't be as hard as Roberts' skin?

Rico_Fata: As good as Crosby is, a fire hydrant could score 50 goals on Lemieux's line, or at least Robbie Brown could score 49.

Seth Rorabaugh: Warren Young not impressed by the Fire hydrant.
