Sheila Lorraine Casey Broadus, 58, of Highland Park, could be likened to the Energizer Bunny.
She would get up at 5:30 a.m. to go to the gym, teach a full day as a speech/language pathologist in Pittsburgh Public Schools and finish the day with more teaching, church work, cooking and enjoying her family.
When she began to slow down about a year ago, her friends and family knew something was wrong. She died at home Friday of complications of ovarian cancer.
Ms. Broadus grew up in East Liberty and graduated from Westinghouse High School in 1967. She completed a stenographic course at Duff's Business Institute and then worked in the personnel department at Giant Eagle corporate headquarters for 10 years.
While working for Giant Eagle, she earned an associate's degree from Community College of Allegheny County. She then went on to earn bachelor's and master's degrees in speech and language pathology at the University of Pittsburgh.
As a certified speech and language pathologist, she worked for Pittsburgh Public Schools for 26 years. Over the years, she supervised more than 20 student teachers. Her most recent assignment was at Pittsburgh Fulton.
In a brief biography she wrote before her death, Ms. Broadus said she was inspired by two role models: her mother, the late Abbie E. Casey, and her sister, Elaine Davis, of Atlanta, a reading specialist.
Harriett Hunley, a speech and language specialist in the Pittsburgh Public Schools, said Ms. Broadus was "just a warm, loving and kind person, very patient and always willing to sacrifice whatever need to be sacrificed in order for the children to move forward in their speech and language skills."
This school year, her colleagues chose her to receive the Marty Blasier Award, which goes to an outstanding speech and language specialist in Pittsburgh Public Schools.
In addition, Ms. Broadus sometimes worked privately as a speech therapist.
She was active in the Bethany Baptist Church in Homewood.
"She loved her church family," said her sister-in-law, JoAnn Owens of Wilkins. She also loved spending time with her family, Cecil, husband of 32 years, and their two children, Nathaniel Allen and Philip Joseph, including bicycling, traveling and playing board games.
In addition to her husband, two children and sister, Ms. Broadus is survived by another sister, Sandra Buford of Cape Cod, Mass.
There will be a memorial service at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Bethany Baptist Church, 7745 Tioga St.
