Cybertainment: Second Life is focus of documentary filmed in virtual world
Friday, May 09, 2008

"Molotov Alva and his Search for the Creator: A Second Life Odyssey" is the first documentary filmed entirely in the virtual world of Second Life.

The half-hour "Molotov Alva" premieres 8 p.m. May 15 on Cinemax, and repeats 7:30 a.m. May 30.In "Molotov Alva," filmmaker Douglas Gayeton leaves his real life to immerse himself totally in a new Second Life existence. The series explores the adventures of Molotov Alva -- Gayeton's Second Life avatar, his personal journey through the alternate world of Second Life and the characters he meets along the way.

Gayeton is the creator of the TV show "Delta State." Along with William Gibson, he wrote and directed a video game based on the movie "Johnny Mnemonic."

The "Molotov Alva" story is based in a virtual world, and so is its distribution strategy. The film is being carried on several platforms: in addition to TV, it will be broadcast in Second Life itself (on the Cinemax Island located there), and on Cinemax.com.

Preview dispatches from the show are running on Cinemax on Demand, Cinemax. com, Second Life, the You Tube Cinemax Channel, and as an iTunes podcast.

The earth looked very different 250 million years ago, when a super-continent called Pangea existed in place of the continents separated by the oceans that we know today.

So Pangea Day is the perfect name for a global event designed to connect people in spirit, if not physically, with the goal of creating a more tolerant and unified world.

The four-hour Pangea Day event takes place 2 to 6 p.m. May 10.

This global event will broadcast live from Cairo; Kigali, Rwanda; London; Los Angeles; Mumbai, India; and Rio de Janeiro.

It includes screenings of 24 films, chosen for their power to transform attitudes and help people to see the world through the eyes of others.

There also will be musical performances and speakers, including Queen Noor of Jordan, CNN's Christiane Amanpour, musicians Bob Geldof and Iranian rock band Hypernova.

The program will be broadcast worldwide via Internet, TV and mobile phones. A live Webcast will be streamed on the Pangea Day site and on MSN International.

There are a few local venues where people can go to watch the streams live -- Carnegie Mellon University's Breed Hall, Room 103 in the Margaret Morrison Building, and Creative TreeHouse, Lincoln Avenue, in Bellevue.
