An 8-year-old Fayette County girl who fell out of a second-story window was in critical condition last night.

Kristin Kessler, of Wharton, sustained head and leg injuries when she leaned back against a window screen and fell 20 feet into a basement stairwell, state police from the Uniontown barracks said.

She was treated at the scene, at 36 Sleepy Hollow Road, and then transported to Ruby Memorial Hospital in Morgantown, W.Va.

Police said nothing at this time indicates the fall was the result of negligence or any criminal act.
