Homeless man convicted of killing benefactor
Thursday, May 08, 2008

A homeless man who killed his benefactor was convicted Tuesday of third-degree murder.

Clarence Turner, 41, faces a possible sentence of 20 to 40 years in the stabbing death Oct. 30, 2006, of Glenn Smart, 54, at Mr. Smart's Hill District residence.

Mr. Smart had allowed Mr. Turner to live with him during the winter because the homeless man had nowhere else to go, police said.

The two men had an altercation and Mr. Smart was stabbed multiple times. Mr. Smart's body was found in the apartment Oct. 30 after relatives reported to police that they had not heard from him for a few days.

A jury deliberated for about 31/2 hours before returning a verdict of third-degree murder.

Common Pleas Judge Randall Todd will preside at sentencing July 29.
