Some homeless military veterans in Allegheny County will benefit from a federal housing grant to the county housing authority.
The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development has approved a grant of $379,302 to provide permanent supportive housing for 70 homeless veterans in Western Pennsylvania, HUD announced this week.
About 10,000 rental assistance vouchers will be provided to 129 public housing agencies in the region to help the homeless veterans. An added goal is for HUD and the Department of Veterans Affairs to link housing agencies with VA medical centers to offer services and case management for eligible vets.
Housing assistance will be available to veterans through HUD's Section 8 Housing Choice Voucher Program, which allows clients to rent private housing.
HUD and the VA will work together to identify eligible participants and help them find suitable housing. Once selected, veterans will receive treatment and case management to retain the vouchers.
