Motion on Wecht jurors' names filed
Tuesday, May 06, 2008

Several Pittsburgh media organizations filed an emergency motion with the 3rd U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals yesterday, asking that the names of jurors in the case against former Allegheny County Coroner Dr. Cyril H. Wecht be revealed by the district court.

Dr. Wecht went to trial on 41 criminal charges in January, but the case ended with a hung jury last month.

U.S. District Judge Arthur J. Schwab originally planned to keep the names of the jurors secret, but the appeals court ordered that they be revealed before their empanelment.

According to the 22-page motion, filed by a number of media outlets, including the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, Judge Schwab has failed to follow through with the appeals court's order.

The organizations are asking that the names of the jurors from the first trial be released, and that the voir dire process for the second trial -- scheduled to begin May 27 -- include the jurors' names.
