The Detroit Tigers recalled Dontrelle Willis from his minor-league rehabilitation assignment yesterday, meaning the injured left-hander -- who is recovering from a hyperextended right knee -- will stay with the team for now instead of in Class AAA.
On Friday, Willis threw 72 pitches without a walk in 42/3 innings while allowing four hits and two runs for the Toledo Mud Hens in the International League. But the team revealed that Willis slightly aggravated his knee while fielding a ground ball in the game.
Willis, who went on the 15-day disabled list April 12, will throw on the side later in the week before the Tigers decide what to do next.
In two starts for Detroit before he got hurt, Willis posted a 7.20 ERA in just five innings without receiving a decision.
Cardinals
St. Louis optioned sputtering reliever Anthony Reyes, who has a 5.27 ERA in nine appearances, to Class AAA Memphis. The 26-year-old Reyes was 2-14 with a 6.04 ERA last year and lost out for a rotation spot in spring training.
Cubs
Aramis Ramirez missed his second consecutive start with a sore left wrist from getting hit by a pitch Friday.
Yankees
Struggling pitcher Ian Kennedy was sent to the minor leagues by the Yankees, who purchased Darrell Rasner's contract from Class AAA Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.
Royals
Kansas City left-hander John Bale, already on the disabled list due to a tight shoulder, broke his pitching hand punching a door at the team's hotel Friday night.
