TV Notes: Barbara Walters details affair
Monday, May 05, 2008

Former U.S. Sen. Edward Brooke declined to comment Friday about whether he had an affair with Barbara Walters in the 1970s.

"I have had a lifetime policy and practice of not discussing my personal and private life, or the personal and private lives of others, with the notable exception of what I wrote in my recently published autobiography, 'Bridging the Divide: My Life,' " he said in a phone interview from Miami.

A relationship with Walters wasn't mentioned in his book, the 88-year-old former senator from Massachusetts said.

His memoir was published in 2006.

In an appearance on "The Oprah Winfrey Show" scheduled to air tomorrow, Walters shares details of her relationship with the married Brooke that lasted several years in the 1970s, according to excerpts of the show.

A moderate Republican who took office in 1967, Brooke was the first African-American to be popularly elected to the Senate. Walters said he and she knew that public knowledge of their affair could have ruined their careers.

At the time, the twice-divorced Walters was a rising star in TV news and co-host of NBC's "Today" show, but she would soon jump to ABC News, where she has enjoyed unrivaled success. She said her affair with Brooke, which never before came to light, had ended before he lost his bid for a third term in 1978.

Brooke later divorced and has since remarried.

Walters, 78, will appear on Winfrey's show to discuss her new memoir, "Audition," which covers her long career in television, as well as her off-camera life. On "Oprah," Walters recounts a phone call from a friend who urged her to stop seeing Brooke.

"He said, 'This is going to come out. This is going to ruin your career,'" then reminded her that Brooke was up for re-election a year later. "'This is going to ruin him. You've got to break this off.'"

Winfrey asks Walters if she was in love.

"I was certainly -- I don't know -- I was certainly infatuated."

"Infatuated."

"I was certainly involved," Walters says. "He was exciting. He was brilliant. It was exciting times in Washington."

Brooke served two full terms from 1967 to 1979, taking on the populist causes of low-income housing, increasing the minimum wage and mass transit. He received the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2004, an honor only 21 U.S. senators have received. (Frazier Moore, Associated Press)

FX brings on 'Anarchy'

FX is going for a ride.

The cable network has ordered a drama series called "Sons of Anarchy," which centers on an outlaw biker club. The show, created by "The Shield" veteran Kurt Sutter, is scheduled to premiere in the fall.

The show stars Charlie Hunnam ("Undeclared") as Jax Teller, a member of the titular club who loves its brotherhood but is concerned about the Sons' illegal activities. Katey Sagal ("Married ... with Children") also stars as Jax's mom, who's married to the club's president. Drea de Matteo ("The Sopranos") and Maggie Siff ("Mad Men") are also in the cast.

As a backdrop, the show will also examine the club's efforts to protect its home of Charming, Calif., from encroaching suburbanization.

Producers Art ("Fight Club," "Fast Times at Ridgemont High") and John Linson ("Lords of Dogtown") brought the idea to FX and will executive produce "Sons of Anarchy" with Sutter, who has been with "The Shield" since its first season, and James Parriott.

"Sons of Anarchy" is one of two shows about bikers in the works. HBO is developing a show called "1%" from "The Player" writer Michael Tolkin. (Zap2it.com)

Lindsay Lohan gets 'Ugly'

Lindsay Lohan will make a guest appearance on the season finale of ABC's "Ugly Betty."

The 21-year-old actress is set to play an old schoolmate of America Ferrera's character, Betty Suarez, on the show's May 22 season closer, according to the trade paper Variety.

Both Variety and Usmagazine.com said Lohan began shooting her scenes during the weekend. Lohan also is expected to appear in five episodes of "Ugly Betty" next season.

Her publicist did not immediately return a call seeking comment yesterday. (AP)

Miley Cyrus at Disney

Miley Cyrus returned to the stage for a concert in Orlando, Fla., but did not say anything about the recent controversy over her Vanity Fair portrait.

The 15-year-old star of "Hannah Montana" performed several songs at the Saturday concert that will be included in the Disney Channel Games series on the Disney Channel.

Cyrus didn't attend Friday's red-carpet party for the games at Disney's Epcot Center, where she would have faced questions from the media.

Cyrus has said she was embarrassed by the photo, which shows her wrapped in a sheet with her back exposed.

She spotted a sign in the crowd Saturday that said, "Miley I'm praying for you," and she responded: "I can't be more appreciative of that."

Saturday's concert also featured performances by the Jonas Brothers and the Cheetah Girls. (AP)
