Casino change request supported by state official
Saturday, May 03, 2008

The chairman of the state House appropriations committee is backing Don Barden's bid to make changes to his proposed North Shore casino.

In a May 1 letter, state Rep. Dwight Evans, D-Philadelphia, urged the Pennsylvania Gaming Control Board to approve the changes, which include $800 million in new financing and delays in the construction of a casino ballroom and an outdoor amphitheater for two to three years after the opening, scheduled for May 1, 2009.

Mr. Evans said it is not uncommon for developers to revise construction plans because of "unforeseen issues" and "outside forces," including fluctuations in financial markets.

"I support Mr. Barden in his efforts and hope the Pennsylvania Gaming Control Board will work with him as well. The casino project in Pittsburgh is far too important to the city and the state for it to be jeopardized in any way," he wrote.

Pittsburgh Mayor Luke Ravenstahl and Allegheny County Chief Executive Dan Onorato also have sent a letter of support for the changes, including an extension from three to five years of Mr. Barden's $3 million Hill District commitment.

Mr. Barden originally wanted to drop the commitment, but decided to honor it after assurances were made that the money would not be used for the Mellon Arena redevelopment.
