
Canon-McMillan (13-3, 8-3), the Post-Gazette's No. 4-ranked team in WPIAL Class AAAA, rallied from a two-run deficit in the bottom of the seventh to knock off visiting Mt. Lebanon (8-7, 7-4), 8-7, in a Section 3 game yesterday.
Trailing 7-5, Andre Hayden hit a two-run single to tie the score, and winning pitcher Chris Douglas followed two batters later with a double to drive in the winning run.
With the win, the Big Macs moved into sole possession of first place in the section. But the race is tight with Mt. Lebanon, Bethel Park (7-4), Peters Township (7-5) and Upper St. Clair (5-6) all in the chase.
"We still have four games left, so this is only as big as the next game we play," said Big Macs coach Steve Bucci.
In a showdown of the top two teams in the City League, No. 2 Allderdice (8-5, 7-1) handed No. 1 Carrick (9-7, 7-1) its first section loss, beating the Raiders, 3-0. Allderdice pitcher Gil Malek threw a one-hitter with 13 strikeouts.
Class AA No. 1 Seton-LaSalle (13-0, 10-0) got 10 strikeouts from winning pitcher Derek Law to roll past Bishop Canevin (6-7, 6-4), 7-0, in Section 6. Chris Weigold went 2 for 2 with two RBIs for the Rebels.
Cody Andrews hit an RBI single in the sixth to break a 2-2 tie and help Class A No. 3 Carmichaels (13-1, 10-0) hold off Bentworth (7-6, 6-5), 3-2, in Section 1. Mighty Mikes pitcher Joby Lapkowicz struck out 14 in the victory.
South Fayette (7-4, 6-4) snapped a two-game losing streak behind the arm of sophomore pitcher Dillon Haviland, who pitched a one-hitter with 15 strikeouts in an 8-0 Class AA Section 6 win against Northgate (7-9, 2-8).
Sophomore pitcher Alex Haines tossed a two-hitter and struck out eight to lead Hempfield (11-4, 7-2) to a 12-0 five-inning romp of Albert Gallatin (3-11, 0-9) in Class AAAA Section 2.
Serra (11-2, 8-2) avenged an earlier loss to Class A No. 2 Mount Alvernia (10-5, 9-2), upending the Lions, 6-1, in Section 4. Winning pitcher Lindsey Smith had 11 strikeouts for the Eagles.
Amber Dongiovanni doubled home Tiffany Brucker in the top of the seventh, enabling Kiski Area (10-4, 10-3) to slip past Penn Hills (6-8, 6-7), 1-0, and maintain its lead in Class AAAA Section 2. Cavaliers pitcher Tarra Oravec picked up the win and allowed just one hit.
