Seton Hill chapel reopening

Seton Hill University will celebrate the reopening of historic St. Joseph Chapel with a special Mass at 5 p.m. Saturday.

It will be at the chapel and Bishop Lawrence E. Brandt will serve as principal celebrant. But because of space restrictions, only members of the university community and invited guests may attend.

The restoration of the chapel began in 2008 and was completed last week. The Allegheny Foundation awarded a $300,000 grant to Seton Hill to repair and repaint the walls and ceiling, sand and refinish the floor and pews, install a new sound system and repair windows.

Irwin recognized nationally

Irwin's Main Street Program, a state-funded component of its downtown revitalization, has gotten national recognition.

Washington, D.C.-based National Main Street Trust, in conjunction with the Pennsylvania Downtown Center in Harrisburg, annually recognizes programs that have effectively followed recommended criteria. Irwin is among 800 towns nationwide to get this designation.

The Irwin revitalization project is in its fourth year. The borough's Main Street Program was implemented 15 months ago.

Borough council hired Donn Henderson as Main Street manager in February 2007. He formerly managed a Main Street Program in Charleroi.
