
The magazines are full of stories about how to whittle your waist, seeing as how beach season is just a month away.
Or perhaps you just want to eat more healthily.
Fitness magazine this week released its second annual Healthy Food Awards for processed foods, based on criteria set by a panel of six nutritionists, members of the magazine's advisory board. The criteria included ideal calories, fat grams, sodium and fiber content. Foods were then taste-tested by Fitness staff members. Winning foods in categories ranging from breakfast foods to snacks will bear an award seal.
Here's a sampling of the 57 winners, along with tasters' comments. All products are available nationally:
Fiber One Honey Clusters -- "Sweet and crunchy, this cereal has more than half your daily intake of fiber in one cup." Per cup: 160 calories, 13 grams fiber.
Cracker Barrel Natural Extra Sharp Cheddar 2 percent Milk Reduced Fat -- "A sharp cheddar flavor. Satisfying when melted on whole-grain bread." Per ounce: 90 calories, 9 grams fat.
Dannon Light & Fit Nonfat Vanilla Yogurt -- "Testers loved this yogurt's flavor." Per cup: 80 calories, 0 grams fat.
Pepperidge Farm Classic 100 percent Whole Wheat Hamburger Buns -- "Whole-wheat goodness without the whole-wheat taste. A family-friendly option for cookouts." Per bun: 120 calories, 2 grams fat, 2 grams fiber.
Applegate Farms Organic Uncured Beef Hot Dogs -- "Low in calories and fat, these ballpark-worthy franks have no additives." Per frank: 100 calories, 7 grams fat.
Snyder's of Hanover Organic Oat Bran Sticks -- A pretzel kids and adults will like: a bit sweet and very crunchy." Per ounce: 120 calories, 2 grams fiber.
Keebler Right Bites Fudge Shoppe Grasshopper Fudge Dipped Mint Cookies -- "Keep them in your bag, desk or car for those times when a cookie-monster moment hits." Per pouch: 100 calories, 3.5 grams fat.

Achieva, which serves adults and children with disabilities and their families, holds its Walk for a Healthy Community on Saturday at Heinz Field, underwritten by Highmark Blue Cross Blue Shield. Registration is at 7:45 a.m.; 5K walk starts at 9 a.m. and the One-Mile Fun Walk at 9:15 a.m.

Korean Central Church of Pittsburgh will hold its Culture and Food Extravaganza from 10:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday at the church, 821 S. Aiken Ave., Shadyside.
Food includes korean sushi, bibimbahp (rice with vegetables and beef in a hot-pepper paste and sesame oil), honey-sweet Korean pancake, rice cakes, steamed dumplings and several kinds of kimchi. There also will get a demonstration of taekwon-do, worship and a movie. Proceeds benefit the church's missions.

The National Association of Letter Carriers Food Drive will be held on May 10. Carriers will take nonperishable grocery items left at your mailbox before your regular delivery time to the Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank.
Heritage Presbyterian Church will hold a Chocolate Fantasy from 7 to 10 p.m. May 10 at the church, 2262 Rochester Road, Franklin Park.
The $10 fee benefits the Senior High Youth Group's mission trip to Mexico.
Billed as a Mother's Day treat, the evening includes chocolate fountains and desserts and as well as raffles. Cost is $10.
