LOUISVILLE, Ky. -- Health insurer Humana says increased Medicare Advantage membership helped drive first-quarter profit above Wall Street expectations, and is raising its outlook for the full year.
Louisville, Ky.-based Humana Inc.'s net income grew to $80.2 million, or 47 cents per share, from year-ago profit of $71.2 million, or 42 cents per share.
Revenue rose 12 percent to $6.96 billion from $6.2 billion, as Medicare Advantage membership climbed 14 percent to 1.27 million.
Analysts surveyed by Thomson Financial expected profit of 45 cents per share on revenue of $6.94 billion.
The company now sees full-year profit of $4.10 to $4.35 per share on revenue of $28 billion to $30 billion, reflecting fewer shares outstanding and a lower tax rate.
