Adam Scott made a 9-foot birdie putt on No. 18 to force a playoff, then made a 48-footer playing it again on the third playoff hole to beat Ryan Moore in the Byron Nelson Championship yesterday in Irving, Texas.
Playing the 18th hole for the third time in less than an hour, the second time in the playoff, Scott hit his tee shot into a fairway bunker to the right. He got his approach to the front side of the green, then rolled the putt over two ridges and into the cup.
Moore still had a chance at forcing another hole, but his pin-high putt from the fringe skimmed just past the cup.
Scott, an Australian star who cut short a post-Masters trip home so not to waste his good play there, blew a three-stroke lead he carried into the final round. But he made the clutch shots when he needed them for his sixth PGA Tour victory, and first this season.
The playoff started with both players making pars, first at No. 18 and then at the TPC Four Seasons' signature par 3, the 198-yard 17th hole, where Moore had taken a one-stroke lead in regulation by curling in a 12-foot birdie putt.
Scott shot a final-round 71, while Moore had 68. Bart Bryant finished third at 277 after a 72.
Stanford International Pro-Am: Annika Sorenstam (70) made a par on the first playoff hole, good enough to beat Paula Creamer (69) and win in Aventura, Fla. It was Sorenstam's 71st career victory on the LPGA Tour, and came after Creamer wasted a great chance down the stretch.
Liberty Mutual Legends of Golf: Tom Watson and Andy North edged Greg Stadler and Jeff Sluman by a stroke in Savannah, Ga. Watson and North teamed for a better-ball 64 for a 31-under 185 total. Stadler and Sluman shot 61. Sandy Lyle and Ian Woosnam (60) finished two strokes back.
Asian Open: A long birdie putt on the final hole gave Northern Ireland's Darren Clarke a one-shot victory in Shanghai, China, his first title in five years. The estimated 25-footer left him at 1-over 73 for an 8-under 280 total, a stroke ahead of Robert-Jan Derksen (73) of the Netherlands.
