I'm probably late to the game on this one, but I'm sure I'm not alone. Back when "Star Trek: Voyager" set sail it had a different captain played by French Canadian actress Genevieve Bujold. After a few days of shooting, Bujold was replaced by Kate Mulgrew who captained the Voyager for the show's entire run.

I always wondered what Bujold's scenes looked like and apparently they were included on the "Voyager" DVDs and someone uploaded them to YouTube. Watch for yourself and you may understand the reason for the recasting. Here's a brief scene:
