The Game Commission's vote last week to increase deer populations in parts of central and south-central Pennsylvania (Wildlife Management Units 4E and 5A), and to continue increasing the population trend in WMU 4B, was based on scientific measurements and the recommendations of a citizen advisory committee, said an agency spokesman.
In WMUs 4C and 4D the committee's recommendation to increase the deer population was not supported by measurements of deer and habitat health. The commission voted to continue existing regulations in those areas.
Despite a low kill last year in WMU 2B, which includes most of Allegheny County, 2008-2009 regs will stay the same.

Losing its legal battle for control of part of the Little Juniata River hasn't kept the Spring Ridge Club and owner Donny Beaver from holding its annual Fly Fishing Classic. With no mention of the change of venue, the contest has moved to Spruce Creek, which has not been deemed "navigable" and remains private property. The June 20-22 contest is part of the Redbone @ Large Celebrity Tournament.
