DETROIT -- A United Auto Workers local at a General Motors Corp. plant near Grand Rapids says it will work past a strike deadline and keep negotiating on a local contract.
UAW Local 730 said today on its Web site that talks on a local contract were making progress. The posting says the union would give GM a 12-hour notice if it intends to strike over unresolved issues.
The union had set a 10 a.m. today strike deadline at the metal stamping plant in suburban Wyoming.
GM could face a strike today at a factory in Kansas City, Kan., in another local contract dispute. That factory makes the hot-selling Chevrolet Malibu.
GM spokesman Dan Flores says talks are continuing, and that the company hopes to reach a deal without a walkout.
