Friday, April 25, 2008

Seneca Valley came into yesterday's softball game at North Hills as the No. 2-ranked team in WPIAL Class AAAA by the Post-Gazette.

But for the second time this season, Seneca Valley lost to North Hills.

Junior Kristen Gumpf hit a run-scoring single in the bottom of the 10th inning, lifting North Hills (6-4, 6-3) to a thrilling 6-5 win against Seneca Valley (11-4, 7-3) in Section 3.

"The girls went out and just worked really hard and never gave up," said North Hills coach Dana Pecanis. "They just made it happen."

North Hills defeated Seneca Valley, 4-3, April 3.

Other top games

McKeesport (8-5, 8-4) took a large step toward qualifying for the playoffs with a 3-1 win against Plum (6-7, 6-6) in Section 2. Sophomore pitcher Jenna Dunlay allowed one hit and struck out 11 for the Tigers, who got a two-run double from junior Lynsey Syzmarek.

• In a matchup of teams tied for third place in Class AAA Section 1, New Castle (7-5, 6-5) earned a much-needed 7-6 victory against Ambridge (7-7, 5-6). Junior catcher Shelby Rodgers had a big game for the Red Hurricane, who had lost two in a row. Rodgers had three hits and five runs batted in, including a winning two-run double in the sixth inning.

• Bolstered by a three-run fourth inning, Leechburg (7-3, 6-2) upset Class A No. 4 Serra (10-2, 7-2), 3-2, in Section 4. Keli Barnes had a two-run single for the Blue Devils, who avenged a 6-5 loss to the Eagles earlier this season.

Pitching gems

• In what has become a trend the past few seasons, Latrobe senior pitcher Alexa Bryson dominated her opponent once again, helping the Class AAAA No. 1 Wildcats (10-0, 10-0) edge Section 1 rival Penn-Trafford (5-10, 2-9), 1-0. Bryson threw a two-hitter and struck out 16.

• Sophomore pitcher Geena Badolato tossed a one-hitter with 15 strikeouts to lead Class AAAA No. 4 Mt. Lebanon (11-2, 8-2) to a 2-0 win against Baldwin (4-7, 3-6) in Section 4.

Double duty

• Senior pitcher Geri Whitman was a star on the mound and at the plate for Beth-Center (10-3, 8-2) in a 14-0 rout of Charleroi (2-11, 0-11) in Class AA Section 2. Whitman threw her fourth no-hitter of the season, while notching 19 strikeouts, and also hit a grand slam.

• Class AA No. 1 Riverside (12-1, 9-0) got 11 strikeouts from junior pitcher Kari Falk -- who added three hits and five RBIs -- helping the Panthers to a 13-2 victory against Freedom (6-8, 4-6) in Section 5.

Coaching news

• Oakland Catholic hired Jim Dudas as its new girls' basketball coach. Dudas had been the coach at South Fayette, where he led the Golden Lions to a 32-20 record and two WPIAL playoff appearances in two seasons.
