Firefighters hurt in blaze at North Side ice cream plant
Wednesday, April 23, 2008
Emergency personnel inspect the scene of a fire at the Reinhold Ice Cream facility on the North Side.

Five firefighters were injured in a blaze that broke out around 4:30 this morning in the Reinhold Ice Cream building on Fulton Street on the North Side.

The firefighters were injured in a ceiling collapse. Two were admitted to hospitals with back injuries.

The fire, which broke out in the boiler room of the building, has been extinguished.

Production at the plant will resume this afternoon, said Mike Mandell, senior vice president for sales and marketing at LaSalle Pittsburgh Corp. The company's plant produces several brands, including Reinhold and North Pole ice cream.

Mr. Mandell said the fire was contained to a cinder-block boiler room and did not spread to the main production plant. The firefighters were hurt when blocks fell on them, he said.

Production was to restart after a new boiler is installed.
