Top-ranked Roger Federer won the Estoril Open in Oeiras, Portugal, and his first title of the season when second-seeded Nikolay Davydenko retired with a leg injury while trailing, 7-6 (5), 1-2, yesterday.
It has been eight years since Federer needed five tournaments to get a shot at his first trophy of season.
"It's not the way you want to win a tournament, but that's just the way it goes sometime," Federer said. "It's great to win a title again and to straightaway win my first clay-court tournament of the season gives me great confidence going into Monte Carlo."
Davydenko, who dropped to 0-12 against Federer, did not elaborate on his injury.
"I have a little injury and I can't finish the match," Davydenko told the court-side crowd. "I'm sorry guys."
In the past two weeks, Davydenko won the Sony Ericsson Open and led Russia to a Davis Cup win past the Czech Republic.
Federer evened his record in clay-court finals to 7-7 on a windy day. Overall, he has won 54 of the 71 finals he has played.
On the women's side, Maria Kirilenko defeated Iveta Benesova, 6-4, 6-2, for her third career title.
Seventh-seeded Marcel Granollers-Pujol of Spain upset top-seeded James Blake, 6-4, 1-6, 7-5, in the U.S. Men's Clay Court Championship at Houston for his first tour title. Granollers-Pujol came back from 3-0 down in the third set, turning back Blake, who at one point won 18 of 19 points.
Serena Williams captured the Family Circle Cup title in Charleston, S.C., defeating Vera Zvonareva, 6-4, 3-6, 6-3, for her first clay-court title since the 2002 French Open. Williams' third title of the year was expected to lift her to No. 6 in the rankings.
The Carnegie Mellon women's team, ranked No. 9 in Division III, lost to No. 4 Emory, 8-1, in the final of the University Athletic Association championship in St. Louis. The doubles team of Kelly Hart and Ashley Herrick won the lone match for the Tartans.
Sylvia Fowles scored 25 points with 18 rebounds and 6 blocked shots to help the U.S. women's team bounce back from a loss and earn a 92-60 victory against Cuba in the Good Luck Beijing tournament. Katie Smith added 19 points and McKeesport's Swin Cash had 12 for USA.
Junior Chris Warner had a home run and a double, but Pitt (12-23, 4-11) lost to St. John's (28-9, 11-4), 11-8, in Big East Conference action at Trees Field. Warner also scored three times, drove in two runs and walked twice.
The Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins defeated the visiting Hershey Bears, 5-1, to take a 3-0 lead in the first round of the AHL playoffs. Tim Brent, Mark Ardelan and Alain Nasreddine each had a goal and assist for the Penguins.
The draw was announced for the men's and women's Olympic tournaments in Beijing that begin in early August. The U.S. women's team won gold medals at the 1996 and 2004 Olympics. In the 12-team women's draw, the United States was in Group G with Norway, Japan and New Zealand.
In the 16-team men's tournament, defending champion Argentina was drawn in Group A alongside the Ivory Coast, Australia and Serbia. In Group B, it's the Netherlands, Nigeria, Japan and the United States. The women's final is Aug. 21 at Workers' Stadium in Beijing. The men's final is Aug. 23 at the new 91,000-seat National Stadium in Beijing -- the "Bird's Nest."
David Boudia won the 10-meter diving title and Nancilea Foster took the 3-meter crown, capturing their events for the second consecutive year at the USA Spring Diving National Championships in Minneapolis. The top eight finishers in each event qualified for the Olympic diving trials, which start June 18 in Indianapolis.
Tiffany Snow scored three goals to lead the United States to a 7-0 win against Russia at an Olympic qualifying tournament in Kazan, Russia.
