Ask LaMont: CoffeeBerry is worth a try
Monday, April 21, 2008
Q: A friend mentioned something to me about a new ingredient in skin care called CoffeeBerry. I'm in my 40s and am very particular about my skin. Is this something worth trying? -- ARIEL SCHMIDT, Cranberry

A: I think it is. CoffeeBerry is the trademarked name of a powerful, naturally occurring antioxidant that has been getting more media attention over the past year with its addition to what so far have been just a few antiaging skin-care products. It's the nutrient-packed red whole fruit of the coffee bush that contains the bean.

According to several studies, CoffeeBerry is more antioxidant-rich than pomegranate and has up to 10 times the antioxidant power of green tea when harvested in its pre-ripened state. With its high concentration of polyphenols -- natural substances that defend against cellular damage to the skin -- it's been called the latest, greatest thing at helping to prevent skin damage.

I have experience with one product that contains CoffeeBerry. It's a night cream in a pump by RevaleSkin. It just helped brighten my complexion within the first few days, and I noticed the skin on my face was more evenly toned and smoother in less than a month. It didn't bleach my skin, which it doesn't claim to do.

At first, I thought the product might be too rich and oily for my combination skin. But whenever I use it, my face is normal -- not dry or oily -- the next morning. It's not greasy and it penetrates pretty rapidly. RevaleSkin also has a day cream with SPF 15 and a facial cleanser, which I have not tried.

The products aren't yet available widely, currently only at iDerma.com, SkinCareRx.com, CompleteSkinCare.net and some dermatologists' offices. But the good part is, you don't need a prescription.
