Chat transcript: Fantasy sports with Nick Fruscello
Friday, April 18, 2008

Nick Fruscello: Once again, its Fantasy Friday and once again, we have a few baseball questions, right off the bat. No pun intended. For those of you that were panicking last week, Prince Fielder hit his first homer of the season in the top of the 10th to help the Brew Crew to a 5-3 win. NOW is the time to get him for you salary cappers out there. Fielder hits homers in bunches, so get him now before his price goes sky high, because right now his value will be as low as it will ever be. Same can be said for Ryan Braun who bats ahead of Fielder. I see big things happening for the Brewers this year and Fielder and Braun are going to be the guys leading the charge. So let's get started and of course, hockey questions are always welcome.

BronxBombers: I was offered Rick Ankiel and Delmon Young for Josh Hamilton. My first reaction is to reject the trade, but then I thought about it and I'm not so sure. Ankiel has power and Young should have a good season.

Nick Fruscello: I'm not completely sold on the pitcher turned OF and as for Young, I mentioned a few weeks ago that Hamilton is a better hitter and I was wrong... he's a MUCH better hitter. He's been on a tear since spring training and its continuing now. He has 15 RBI's in 16 games and a BA over 300. Expect that trend to continue all season long, as long as he stays healthy. By the end of this year, you'll look at that trade and be glad you didn't pull the trigger.

BronxBombers: Hideki Matsui just hit the waiver wire in my league, but I don't want to waste a waiver request if he's going to be average. What's your projection for him?

Nick Fruscello: Matsui had a lot of promise when he came into the league and people expected him to be Godzilla when he came over from Japan, but the truth is, he's not. The homeruns he was hitting over in Japan are turning into doubles over here. Currently, he's batting behind A-Rod which means he gets the best homerun hitter and RBI's machine ahead of him. Having said that, he still gets a good amount of RBI's each year and is a pretty consistent hitter. Expect around .300, close to 30 HR's and 110-120 RBI's. Not a bad pickup for waivers.

BronxBombers: Any sleepers I should be on the lookout for?

Nick Fruscello: Since the beginning of the season, I've been pretty high on Billy Butler as a good sleeper and he's batting a healthy .339. However there's another Royal people should be giving some consideration to and that's Alex Gordon. The "savior of the Royals" as some of dubbed him, leads his team in HR's, RBI's and runs. He also has a .333 avg and has a couple steals. He's still having problems hitting left handed pitching, but he's starting to live up to his potential and a 30 HR, 120 RBI season isn't out of question, especially if they move him up in the order. A couple other guys are Mike Jacobs and Josh Willingham. Both are playing incredibly well so far on a struggling Marlins team.

BronxBombers: Yahoo is saying right now that Kevin Kouzmanoff is a must pick up. What're your thoughts?

Nick Fruscello: I really hesitate to call any Padre hitter a "must pickup". They play half of their games at PETCO park which is a hitter's nightmare and although Kouzmanoff (good hockey player name there) will put up decent numbers, they won't compare to similar hitters playing in better parks. If you're desperate you could give him a shot, but to win championships you sometimes need to take a chance on players that could produce HUGE numbers. Alex Gordon will outproduce Kouzmanoff, guarenteed.

smz: whats going on with pg baseball? who is running this thing?

Nick Fruscello: I talked to Dell Sports this morning and they're working on fixing the problem with the updates to the game and they assured me that the stats would be updated every Monday going forward.

malkin71: Who do the Pens matchup best against in the next round?

Nick Fruscello: The Pens best matchup or who do I want them to play? I want them to play the Caps. They're not real physical and they're a one trick pony (Ovechkin). Honestly though, I think the Pens matchup well with everyone left over. No one will be as easy as the Senators, but I don't see anyone besides possibly Montreal that can beat the Pens in a best of seven series in the East.

malkin71: I'm calling it right here, right now... Bruins in 7 over the Habs. Thank You

Nick Fruscello: HA!! Yeah, well, we will see. I was very surprised to see the Bruins beat the Habs in an elimination game in Montreal. Boston has home ice for Game 6 and if they win that, they're one lucky bounce away from knocking off the top team in the East... but don't get your hopes up. The Habs will be moving on.

malkin71: Hey, have you seen the Washington Crapitals anywhere? Whenever I turn on their series, I see the Flyers pushing around a bunch of wimps.

Nick Fruscello: The Capitals apparently have left their grapefruits at home because the Flyers are all over them in this series. Huet is getting no support and Flyer goons are running him over and over. Maybe the Caps could lure Dale Hunter, Dennis Maruk and Craig Berube out of retirement. They may be over the hill but at least they have guts.

theWellHungarian: what should i do about Prince Fielder or should I take The Talented Mr. Roto advice & "Don't... Trade... Prince... Fielder..."

Nick Fruscello: I wouldn't trade Fielder for anything right now. Its still April and he hit his first homer yesterday. He got off to a slow start last year and ended with 50. Keep him on your team

malkin71: Earlier in the week on your site, you had a "should Conklin play a game against the Sens" poll. Are you kidding me??

Nick Fruscello: Well the landslide answer was "No", so I still have faith in Pittsburgh as a hockey town. Yeah, I can't imagine a situation other than injury that would make Conklin start a game. He'll come in as relief if Fleury has a bad game, but right now Fleury is the hottest goalie in the league and playing Conklin is unthinkable.

Nick Fruscello : Alright guys, that's all the time I have for this week. If you haven't already, check out PG fantasy baseball at http://post-gazettebaseball.pickmanager.com/baseball . There you can compete against me and see just how much you know.
