Group hoping to restore creative play center
Thursday, April 17, 2008

A grass-roots movement to bring back the Center for Creative Play will hold its first meeting at 7 tonight at the Wilkins Community Center in Swissvale.

The all-inclusive play center, which opened in 1995 at Station Square and later moved to a vacant grocery store in Swissvale, closed unexpectedly March 31. It had served 45,000 to 50,000 visitors a year.

The president of the center's board of trustees gave no explanation for its sudden closing, but people close to the operation said the center had struggled financially for years.

The group, Bringbackcfcp, was established the day the center closed by concerned parents.

The Wilkins Community Center is at 7604 Charleston Ave., on the corner of Braddock Avenue, about a block up the hill from the play center's location. More information is available at www.bringbackcfcp.com.
