It's the second half of April and the smell of Mel Kiper's hair slick is wafting down the East Coast from the ESPN studios in Bristol ... here's a run down of mock drafts floating around the Internets ...
The consensus favorite (at the moment) among draftniks is Gosder Cherilus, an absolute mountain of a man at left tackle from Boston College. This according to Don Banks at Sports Illustrated, Pat Kirwan at NFL.com, The Associated Press, Pro Football Weekly, the Sports Exchange, Draft Insiders, the Bleacher Report, NFL Draft Countdown, and Walter Football.
Gosder Cherilus -- sounds like the name of an Eastern European hockey player or something -- we only wish Myron were still here to mangle his name. At any rate, this guy seems tailor-made for the Steelers' needs on the line, and unless Jeff Otah is still on the board (he won't be) this seems like a solid, safe pick at No. 23.
Apparently the Steelers have some issues at the Guard position -- perhaps you've heard. To that end, another gentleman, Branden Albert of Virginia is named as a likely pick for the Steelers according to NFL.com's Vic Carucci, most of the panel at USA Today, and Draft Dog.
Albert is a terrific prospect, but unless the Steelers move north of slot 23, he won't be around. Pete Prisco of CBS SportsLine has the Steelers selecting Justin King, the CB from Penn State via Monroeville. Intriguing, but in the years since Jack Ham and Franco Harris donned the Black & Gold the Steelers seem to enjoy torturing local Penn State alumni by not drafting top Nittany Lions prospects (see: Johnson, Larry), especially if they come from Western Pennsylvania (see: Posluszney, Paul).
Prisco's SportsLine compadre Clark Judge says they'll pick big Jeff Otah, the OT from Pitt. But likewise, the Steelers torture Pitt fans too -- most recently by not making a move for Darrelle Revis -- and when they do draft a Pitt guy in the first round it's a luminary like ... Tom Ricketts. Plus Otah should go top 15. He won't be around anyway.
From the totally random department, the Washington Post says the Steelers will grab Kenny Phillips, S, Miami. Do these guys watch football? Ryan Clark? Anthony Smith? Hello? The Steelers do not need a safety. They need lineman.
As previously reported the Steelers like Jonathan Stewart, the RB from Oregon, and Football Outsiders thinks the young man will line up with Fast Willie. We'd prefer the Steelers hold pat and make a run at human battering ram Ray Rice in the second round. But it would be hilarious if a Colbert (Kevin) picked a Jon Stewart.
Finally, the Dallas Morning News thinks the Steelers will add to their defensive weaponry by selecting Kentwan Balmer, a DE from North Carolina.
Honestly, we at BNG don't know a single thing about this player, except that it would be the ultimate irony, if a player named Balmer -- which is almost exactly the same way locals in Charm City pronounce Baltimore -- played for the Steelers.
