One eye on gas prices and one eye on fuel-efficient vehicles

Worried about fuel economy? Join the crowd.

All of us are shell-shocked by the price of gasoline these days, and many of the car writers I talk with say they won't be surprised if prices hit $5 a gallon within the next year or two.

It's anyone's guess how the public will react if that happens, but you'd be smart to plan for it now. And that includes buying a home closer to your job to cut down on commutes, drive only as much as you have to -- and buying a car or truck that gets decent gas mileage.

With that in mind, here's a list of the most fuel-efficient vehicles this year, by category. Rankings are courtesy of the Environmental Protection Agency:

Two-seater cars:
