Seth Rorabaugh's Penguins chat transcript 04/14/08
Monday, April 14, 2008

Justin: Do you think in the back of their minds, Ottawa knows that their goals were garbage goals and, thus, still haven't produced any real offense the entire series?

Seth Rorabaugh: Maybe, but who cares? Goals are goals at this time of year.

Justin: Am I the only one who is against Staal being on the second power play? He doesn't handle the puck well, makes bad decisions, and is just not power play pedigree.

Seth Rorabaugh: He certainly has some issues in those areas, but the the penguins are going to give him every chance to succeed or fail in terms of offense.

Justin: FINALLY, Fleury did something about people standing in front of his net, a la LaPointe, I hope he keeps that up.

Seth Rorabaugh: Ed Belfour used to cripple guys by doing that move. i wonder if someone handed Fleury a Belfour highlight tape, minus the billion dollar bribes to cops

James_Mirtle: Seth, where's the best place to get some good grub and a drink after Penguins games? I heard you would know best. Oh, and WWGRD?

Seth Rorabaugh: I've heard good things about Primanti Bros. ... Whatever he darn well pleases.

Justin: Any word on a Whitney/Tyson match?

Seth Rorabaugh: I hear Don King is going to promote it as the rumble in, uh ... Blawnox.

James_Taipei: Does Gary Roberts ride off into the sun set if the Penguins win the Stanley Cup this year? Any word of Roberts possibly coming back as a coach with the Pens?

Seth Rorabaugh: Hard to say. Gary Roberts at this point is all about passion for playing the sport. Can he handle not working out on a daily basis and not preparing to play the sport? I can't see Roberts on a golf course. If Gary Roberts wants Michel Therrien's job ... he'll tell Michel Therrien he wants his job.

SerowikGalanov_KesaOhMy: What kind of impact do you think Alfredsson can have if he plays tonight? They've been real secretive with how significant his injury is. Will he be a power play specialist?

Seth Rorabaugh: Not much. He had a head, err -- excuse me, "upper body" injury and a knee injury. If he played tonight, he wouldn't exactly be 100 percent.

mbpensfan: How much do you think it will cost the Pens to resign Malkin. After the year he has had and is having in the playoffs might he command Crosby type money or possibly more?

Seth Rorabaugh: How does, oh, I don't know -- I'm just going to pull this number out of the air -- $8.7 million sound? He will be in Crosby's neighborhood money wise when it comes time to talk turkey.

SerowikGalanov_KesaOhMy: Boston stole one last night and looks like it will give the Habs fits. The Devils aren't going quietly. The Caps and Flyers have seven games written all over them. How big would finishing the Sens off in 4 or 5 games be?

Seth Rorabaugh: Awesome screen name by the way. Was there no room for Tuomas Grohman though? It would be huge. For the first time in a long time, the Penguins are the healthiest team in the Eastern Conference. Mark Eaton is the only person out of the lineup due to an injury. Just about everyone else is dealing with injuries. It would be ideal if they could put Ottawa away early and watch everyone else beat themselves up.

Shorty: With the chance of Alfredsson coming back tonight, probably not at full strength, do you think it'll be a case of too little too late?

Seth Rorabaugh: Yes, even if he were 100 percent. Ottawa was falling apart with a healthy Alfredsson in the lineup. They can fall apart with a beat up Alfredsson in the lineup as well.

SerowikGalanov_KesaOhMy: Have the beat writers said anything about what Roberts thinks regarding his cult hero status?

Seth Rorabaugh: I am not aware. I think people are too scared he might take their soul if such a question were raised. Seriously though, I have to imagine he's aware of it. Anyone who has gone to one game this season has to be aware of it.

geno23: Seth do you think Fleury's confidence is at all shaken up? He has been on fire as of late, giving up 3 goals might be just what the Sens needed to rattle him going forward.

Seth Rorabaugh: No not at all. He made a few key saves down the stretch of that game to keep them at three goals and ultimately won the game. Plus he didn't have a great deal of help on those goals with Ottawa players setting up shop on his doorstep.

Justin: Will the Pens be doing any Sean Avery impressions tonight while screening the goalie?

Seth Rorabaugh: From what I understand, the higher-ups at the NHL have addressed that issue specifically and anything like that will be penalized. You have to give Avery credit for being creative though.

Shorty: If the Pens and Montreal win, we'd get the higher of the seeds remaining. Who do you think we match up best against? I'd love to see the Caps and Pens renew their playoff rivalry!

Seth Rorabaugh: The Capitals. That would just be amazing hockey to watch. End to end skating. Ulitmately I think the Penguins have more horses than the Capitals in that type of match up. I wouldn't mind seeing them get Montreal either. I'd hate to see them get the Rangers. Lundqvist is tough.

PensInFive: In four or five?

Seth Rorabaugh: I'm hoping and leaning towards four.

rhamner: Do you see Sydor getting on the ice at some point?

Seth Rorabaugh: Not unless someone gets hurt or just stinks up the ice. The most likely player to be replaced would be Whitney and he hasn't exactly been his worst the last two game.

geno23: Seth, is it just me or is Gerber playing unbelievable? To me it seems if the Pens don't put at least 35 shots on net they can't win the game. He's been real solid.

Seth Rorabaugh: Who would think Ottawa's goaltending would be it's strong suit in this series? he's clearly been this team's best player so far.

PensInFive: What are your thoughts on Avery's "screening" tactics last night? Bettman says all GM's will have a letter on their desk by 4pm today, however, if it's not a rule what can he do to stop it?

Seth Rorabaugh: Well there is a rule about making a gesture to threaten an opponent. And I believe they're going to try and apply that rule to this action. I had no problem with it. It just seemed like a creative way to occupy a goaltender. As far as the idea of waving the stick at a goaltenders face being dangerous, there are far more dangerous activities on the ice that are normal parts of a game. Like following through on a shot or checking a guy from behind on a forecheck. Basically, if it were Tyler Kennedy doing it instead of Sean Avery, its not that big of an issue.

Justin: Are you impressed with Tyler Kennedy's play? I know he has not had any points, but he has looked extremely good skating around and throwing checks. Kind of impressive considering this is his first playoff appearance.

Seth Rorabaugh: Tyler Kennedy has been very solid. I don't think they're expecting points out of him, just solid third line play and that's what he has brought.

SerowikGalanov_KesaOhMy: How about the Flames coming back from the dead last night? That game -- between the amazing coming to the raucous red-out in Calgary -- is why the Stanley Cup Playoffs are unmatched.

Seth Rorabaugh: That was a classic game last night. I'm glad I was able to catch it. That hit Corey Sarick put on Patrick Marleau got things going for the Flames last night and they never looked back. The fans in Calgary are intense. When you saw Sarich's hit, everyone in the the stands by the glass had the same jersey own. That's why they call it the "C of Red" up there.

Justin: I know they addressed it, I was just messing around. Although I could see Talbot doing something crazy like that, haha.

Seth Rorabaugh: Max Talbot wears Gary Roberts pj's to bed.

SerowikGalanov_KesaOhMy: Best place to watch a playoff game: A) At the arena; B) On the grass in front of the big screen; C) At home in high-def; D) At a sports bar; E) Via Yahoo!'s wonderful live streaming. My choice is either of the last two tonight, out of necessity, but I'm guessing they are the worst two options.

Seth Rorabaugh: Depends on if you can get Mellon Arena's nachos at home. I'm guessing you can't. Assuming it doesn't hail like it did Friday, the grass at mellon Arena seems like a good option.

theWellHungarian: In all honesty, who do you think is the better player, Malkin or Crosby?

Seth Rorabaugh: right now right this minute? Malkin. He's healthier, he clicking with his linemates and he's just the better player right now. When he skates with the puck, I hold my breath because you don't know what could happen. I don't feel that same way about Crosby. Right now. He's still doesn't seem 100 percent from that ankle injury and he clearly isn't in synch with Hossa/Dupuis/Talbot, etc. yet. But he's not a bad No. 2.

geno23: Seth why can't we get Sydor in the lineup? Has Letang really warranted his spot? Whitney at least earned a spot when he spanked Wade Redden in that fight.

Seth Rorabaugh: If playing time were warranted on th basis of fighting ability, Georges Laraque would be manning the left boards on the power play. I think Letang has easily been their most complete defenseman most of the season. He's not as good offensively as Gonchar or as physical as Orpik or Gill, but he has just the right combination of those abilities. Letang is the least of their worries on defense.

PensInFive: Gary Roberts' tears cure cancer. It's too bad he's never cried.

Seth Rorabaugh: There is no theory of evolution. Just a list of animals Gary Roberts allowed to live.

Justin: Are you concerned with the lack of goal production from Hossa? Do you think it is started to affect him psychologically?

Seth Rorabaugh: I am somewhat. I would be a lot more concerned if they were tied 1-1 or even down 0-2. But for the moment they don't need him to score with the way Malkin is playing. That said, he was clearly brought in here to score goals and he's not doing that yet. I wonder if his knee might still be an issue.

Justin: I read your blog on Sean Avery. Why didn't the referees do something about it in the game? Or better yet, why didn't the Devils D step up and take Avery out? I miss Scott Stevens.

Seth Rorabaugh: I think because no one has ever done anything like that in a game. Plus there's really no rule on the books about that specific action. That wouldn't have flown on Scott Steven's watch.

SerowikGalanov_KesaOhMy: Who wins in a fight? Whitney or the Cotton Candy guy?

Seth Rorabaugh: CCGuy. His guns are ripped from lugging around all that cotton candy and his conditioning has to be out of this world. He's chugged up and down those steps forever.

mbpensfan: Any chance he will settle for $7.1 million? On that logic, getting Ryan Malone at $1.2 million is a steal. I'll come back to reality now.

Seth Rorabaugh: They better hope Aleksey Morozov doesn't want to comeback then.
