A New Brighton man was killed over the weekend when his sport utility vehicle crashed into the back of a tractor trailer on Route 18 in Big Beaver, state police said.

Thomas Stief III, 39, was driving southbound on Route 18 when he ran into the truck, which was stopped in the left hand turn lane, at around 11:45 p.m. Friday near the entrance of Big Beaver Plaza. Mr. Stief's car, a 1996 Ford Explorer, hit the truck with the driver side of the vehicle, causing severe front driver side damage.

He was taken to UPMC Presbyterian, where he died at 1:45 a.m. the Saturday, the Allegheny County Medical Examiner's office said.
