When crew members from "Smart People" promised to restore the Mangan house in Friendship to its original state, they weren't kidding. They returned the wine bottles in a rack in the dining room to their original slots, thanks to the "before" photos they took.
They left the cabinet doors and countertop they installed in the kitchen because owners Tom and Kim Mangan plan to redo the room themselves at some point. He is a trainer for Dale Carnegie and his wife is a project manager for Management Science Associates.
In fact, the movie had been scouting for a house that didn't have a modern kitchen with sleek granite surfaces. That wouldn't have fit the fictional Wetherhold family, still grieving the loss of a wife and mother a decade later.
The Mangans, who moved into the house on Presidents Day 2006 and temporarily turned it over to the production later that year, watched their residence at 411 S. Graham St. be aged, although not in a flattering way.
"They painted throughout the house to make it look like someone had been smoking in the house for 30 years. The walls were dirty and dingy, with paint peeling and cracking" after their handiwork, Tom Mangan said this week. It was later reversed, of course.
The filmmakers moved the couple to a Downtown hotel, boarded their two dogs in a kennel and brought in "books by the pound and all this nasty '70s furniture," Mangan said. The movie is set in the present day, but the home demanded a slightly neglected, dated look.
The production had left a note in the vestibule inquiring about using the Colonial Revival house, built in 1873. The couple agreed to let the crew repaint woodwork already painted but not to touch the wood that wasn't painted.
"They made a fake stained-glass window for our landing, and it's quite large. On the landing above that is real stained glass," Mangan said, and an artist tried to match it.
"We just had them leave it. At some point we're going to replace it with a full stained-glass window, but it's amazing, because our home was on the [Friendship] home tour last year and so many people thought it was real."
Asked if he would ever allow his house to be used for another movie, Mangan didn't hesitate. "Heck, yeah." It's not often a homeowner can say Dennis Quaid, Sarah Jessica Parker, Thomas Haden Church, Ellen Page and Ashton Holmes ate or slept or played here.
If you're looking for the college bar from the film, you won't find it. It was created at the Loyal Order of Moose Lodge on 51st Street in Lawrenceville. The production removed a partition to open up the space and, when filming was completed, replaced it with a counter that can accommodate 16 patrons.
Many of the "Smart People" scenes were filmed on the campus of Carnegie Mellon University and you can look for: Baker, Doherty and Hamburg halls, Donner House, along with the William Larimer Mellon Auditorium in Posner Hall, Hunt Library and Skibo Gymnasium.
Bouquet and Sennott streets provide the backdrop for a hospital drop-off, while the library also doubles as a cafeteria. Parker's character lives at Essex House on Centre Avenue in Shadyside, and a Goodwill store in Cheswick, Arby's in McKees Rocks and Costco in Robinson factor into the film, too.
The Pittsburgh Athletic Association serves as a snazzy restaurant, and the Omni William Penn is transported to Manhattan. There are some things you cannot fake, such as a CAT scan room, and that's the real deal at Allegheny General Hospital.
And if you've ever spent time at the luggage carousels at Pittsburgh International Airport, you'll see that the landmark plays itself, too.
